DEAD AT 47
EXCLUSIVERodney King -- the man who was at the center of the infamous Los Angeles riots -- was found dead this morning in Rialito, CA. He was 47.

According to our sources, King's fiancée found him dead at the bottom of a pool.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they responded to a call at 5:25 AM PT. We're told they physically removed King from the pool and attempted CPR.

Our sources say he was pronounced dead at 6:11 AM.

Law enforcement sources say Rialto PD will open a drowning investigation.



King became famous in 1991 when he was the victim of police brutality at the hands of the LAPD. The officers involved in the incident were acquitted the following year and the announcement of the verdict led to the Los Angeles riots.

TMZ spoke with King about two months ago, where he seemed upbeat and introspective.

You’d be surprised how many people cannot swim.  I for one I shamefully admit I have a phobia since the age of 12 when I nearly drowned.    :icon_pale:

Wow...that's a pretty sad ending to a life.  I'm confused about him being found at the bottom of the pool though...don't dead bodies float?  If he was found at the bottom, then maybe he wasn't dead yet?  Not sure how that works, nor I guess does it matter...just curious if anyone has insight into this.

On June 17, 2012, media outlets reported that King's fiancée found him dead in his swimming pool. Police in Rialto, California, received a 911 call from King's fiancee, Cynthia Kelly, about 5:25 a.m PST. Responding officers found King at the bottom of the pool, removed him, and attempted to revive him. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.[43]

i can swim very poorly, probably not well enough to save my life. and thats bad being an australian as its strong in our culture. i am sorry to hear you have a phobia, that must be terrible.

He drowned because of that. Drinking and smoking, not a good combination in the water.

Yeah...especially when you never know when people you wrote about in your book may come around to hold you under.

I don't think this was an accident. Evil waits years, until it thinks it will never be connected to a convenient crime. Make no mistake: Certain people are consumed with making hate & retaliation their mission in life, even though they sullied their own reputation in the first place, acting like their hate has no consequences. All eyes are gonna be back on them now.

Rodney King was laid to rest today at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, where such notable names as Michael Jackson, Andy Gibb, Liberace, and Ed McMahon were laid to rest.

The family held a private funeral early in the day, and then a public memorial and burial

Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered the eulogy, said of King, "People should not be judged by the mistakes that they make, but by how they rise above them. Rodney had risen above his mistakes, he never mocked anyone, not the police, not the justice system, not anyone."

During the service, a slideshow of King's life played above an open casket. His fiancée Cynthia Kelley did not attend.

King died at his home in Rialto, CA on June 17. He was 47.
