LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge is delaying the trial for the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death to give defense attorneys time to counter new prosecution experts.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor says "the need for fundamental fairness" requires a delay. He didn't say how long.

Dr. Conrad Murray's defense attorney, Ed Chernoff, told the judge the Houston-based cardiologist had agreed to delay the case.

New dates for the trial and resumption of jury selection were not immediately set.

Chernoff on Friday said the delay was to counter newly disclosed experts who a prosecutor said would support the "cornerstone" of their case.

Murray pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Authorities have accused him of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in the bedroom of the singer's rented mansion.

Trial of Michael Jackson's doctor could be delayed
By Alan Duke, CNN
May 2, 2011 -- Updated 1513 GMT (2313 HKT)
STORY HIGHLIGHTS

    * NEW: Dr. Conrad Murray's lawyers ask for two more weeks to prepare for trial
    * The judge will hear arguments for a delay Monday
    * A trial delay would be expensive for cash-strapped L.A. courts
    * Murray's trial testimony is set to start next week

Los Angeles (CNN) -- A judge will decide Monday whether the voluntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor, set to start next week, will be delayed.

Lawyers for Dr. Conrad Murray told the judge Friday that they need more time to answer what they say are new theories about Jackson's death raised by the prosecution.

Unless Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor accepts the defense motion for a delay, jury selection will conclude this week and testimony will start next Monday.

The defense motion filed Sunday asked for a two-week break between the time jurors are chosen, which is expected to conclude by Friday, and opening statements and testimony.

"I'm not saying what I'm prepared to do, because I need to hear and see more information," Pastor said during a Friday afternoon hearing.

A delay, however long, would be expensive for the cash-strapped court system. Pastor said there had been a "massive investment of time and money" put toward the trial.
Dr. Conrad Murray: 'I'm an innocent man'

There are 171 potential jurors already "hardship qualified" for a two-month trial, but a delay might require them to go through the process again.

The possibility of a delay was raised earlier Friday when Pastor ruled prosecutors could call new expert witnesses, including one who would testify that there was no way Jackson could have self-ingested the drug that the coroner said killed him.

Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff said he consulted with Dr. Murray after that hearing and they agreed they needed more time to prepare their expert testimony to counter the new prosecution experts.

"This is precisely the matter I fully expected that was going to happen when the defense said it wanted to go in 60 days," Pastor said.

Murray invoked his right to a speedy trial after January's preliminary hearing in which the prosecution's expert witness admitted he made a math mistake that supported the defense theory that Jackson may have given himself the fatal dose of propofol.

Propofol is a surgical anesthetic that the Los Angeles coroner ruled killed Jackson, in combination with several sedatives found in his blood.

"I actually made a mistake on that," Dr. Richard Ruffalo testified during cross-examination, referring to his calculation of the levels of drugs in Jackson's stomach fluid.

Murray's lawyers suggest a frustrated and sleepless Jackson may have poured the surgical anesthetic propofol mixed with lidocaine into his juice bottle while the doctor was out of his bedroom.

A new expert approved by Pastor on Friday will testify that he "concludes it was impossible for Michael Jackson to orally ingest" the fatal drug, prosecutor David Walgren said.

"Super expert Dr. Ruffalo prepared a 60-page report," Defense lawyer Michael Flanagan said in court Friday. "We got ready on that, but now the trial in this case will look nothing like the preliminary. I bet you they're not going to call Ruffalo."

The prosecution said the defense is always welcome to call the former prosecution expert.

"They are not calling their original 11 experts," Flanagan said. "They've got three brand new ones, which requires us to prepare all over again for these new theories and justifications of these theories."

The new experts will present "more detailed analysis, but not a new theory," Walgren said.

In Session's Beth Karas contributed to this report.

Murray Trial May Be Delayed
Defense lawyers seek time to line-up new witnesses
By Yvonne Beltzer
Friday, Apr 29, 2011 | Updated 4:27 PM PDT

Lawyers for Dr. Conrad Murray want to delay his manslaughter trial that was scheduled to begin next week with jury selection.

Although Murray had originally refused to waive his right to a speedy trial, his attorneys told the judge Friday that they need more time to line up new defense experts to refute new prosecution witnesses.

L.A. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor has ordered a hearing on Monday morning to obtain more information before deciding whether to grant the continuance.

Pastor had hoped to begin jury selection next week and have opening statements by the following week.

He said in court that a "massive investment of time and money" had been put toward the trial.

He added that a delay might be costly.

Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff said he consulted with Murray after the hearing and the doctor agreed that his attorneys needed more time to prepare their case in light of prosecution changes.

One new prosecution witness is expected to testify that it would have been impossible for Michael Jackson to have taken the anesthetic propofol orally the morning he died.

This is at odds with defense theory, but the judge ruled Friday that the new prosecution witness would be allowed to testify.

I can't take this anymore. Delayed to 20th September?! There's no way if Michael was alive to postpone this forever! What is too long, IS too much and it can't be possible. There's no way this is planned by Michael, if he was alive and behind this he would have it under control. It's already been long, in a short time no one would be here anymore, it's been too long!

I haven't had a chance to read through the article yet, but it isn't uncommon at all for trials to be delayed multiple times.  Yes, it is frustrating, but it happens all of the time.

The trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death has been delayed until September.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor on Monday put off opening statements that had been set for next week and says he will release potential jurors who have started the screening process.

Pastor now says jury selection will begin on Sept. 8 and opening statements will begin later that month.

Attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray asked to delay the trial to prepare for new prosecution experts expected to be called as witnesses.

Murray had been seeking a speedy trial but has waived that right to allow his attorneys time to prepare. The defence team claimed the prosecution introduced new experts to its list of witnesses on the eve of the trial.

Pastor says he allowed the delay because of the need for fundamental fairness in the trial.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the singer's June 2009 death.

The Houston-based cardiologist is accused of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in the bedroom of the his rented mansion.

Who? Lopez and Lopez  suspicious//

Remember there are 2 of them...

"Tim Lopez, a pharmacist at Applied Pharmacy Services in Las Vegas, said beginning on April 6, 2009, Dr. Murray began ordering large quantities of Propofol. On that date, he ordered 10 single dose vials."

You guys give up so fast.. I understand that they delayed the trial to September. Like I always said Michael will not come back this July but next yr with LE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL. MICHAEL IS ALIVE ALIVE ALIVE.. Why does this put down your faith. Remark my words there will probably be no trial. For me this is a very good thing. I will explain.. When my uncle was murdered the trial was not delayed at all they set it for a certain date and it went through, because he really really died. So please do not give up hope, FAITH FAITH FAITH.. I am getting a little tired of being the one to pep everyone to be positive. In a situation you need to analyse, be rational and thing why this happening? You will get your answer. The more you get upset the more you are not thinking properly. I am telling you this is all Michaels doing. blessings.

I will give you a suggestion, more an advice take a break, do something for yourself, go to a spa, go away for the weekend. Michael does not want any one of his fans to get sick over his hoax. You need to focus on yourself right now. This is what I am doing and it works wonders.. This  advice is for everyone. I know the wait can be so tireing, and agravated, remember something there is always a reason for something. Just think Michael may have not finished what he had to do!  Hope this will help everyone...

Patience is a virtue. Believe me who waits gets good things in life. We just need to hang on a little longer that is all. I think we owe it to Michael.  Positive and have faith.. keep yourselves occupied and you will see how the time will pass by. Go out with friends, have fun, just don't dwell on this 24 hrs a day... I am trying to help you guys, I am also a pshychologist so I know that for a fact the more you do things for yourselves the better you will feel inside and you will regenerate and will be more positive.
I'm sure he doesn't want us to suffer but this is what we do - and he had to know that this would happen before he started this hoax.
About taking a break: I just took a break, I read only a few news about the hoax during last month.
But although it is good not to focus that much on the hoax, it is still frustrating not knowing the truth (not just that whether he is alive or not, but WHY he is doing this hoax).
I don't know what Michael is doing, why he is doing it, but I have to tell that I really don't like this hoax, I never did.
And the longer it goes the more frustrating it is.

After september we will wait for 2012 because 2012 is such a popular, and then we will wait for 2013 because the 4 years in which we have to get it right are fulfilled. So the end of 2013 is the deadline. I don't want to end like  elvis_/ fans.

This is exactly why it is so hard, because it's not in our control at all but at the same time we are effected whether we want or not.

I am finding this very interesting.   It's probably a coinsidence, but, how weird that the news of Osama being killed and then the guests on Oprah's show today is President Obama.

Then, they said on CNN today, that the Conrad Murray trial has been postponed for another FOUR months.  Which will be sometime in September.

THAT IS WHEN THE OPRAH'S LAST SHOW WILL BE!!

If this really is a hoax, how appropriate that BAM would be on the O show.  And, isn't that right around the timing of the IMMORTAL tour?

Could he really be coming back and being on this tour?????

I'm just wondering.  Not saying I believe that, but it does make ya wonder.

I'm confused.  Somebody on here, a while back said Oprah's last show would be in September.  But I just googled it and it says May 25th.   So, who knows for sure when it is.  I'm just thinking if he's coming back, that would be an ideal platform.  But...perhaps not.  Really wanting this trial to get going, if there is really going to be one.

Hi all,

Postponing the trial comes as no surprise to me. In fact I find it interesting to say the least. I've learned to stop looking for the bad in everything that happens and start looking for the good. The trial is postponed until September. Michael BAMS before September! Makes since to me.   bounce/

The people around me who keep insisting that MJ is dead always throw back at me "why would they send a man to prison if he's not dead?" And I ask them "how do you know he will go to prison? How do we know if he will even go to trial, let alone to prison?"  Look at how quickly they took the people to trial who they felt were responsible for the death of Anna Nicole Smith. The difference here is that Ms. Smith actually died!

Also how can anyone on this site be so sure when MJ will come back when no one even knows for sure why he did what he did, how he did it, who helped him do it, how long it had been in the planning, where is he now, and I could go on and on.

Someone earlier mentioned "hope." That's what this postponement gives me, hope!! Hope that just maybe something good is going to happen between now and September!  :)  In short hope helps me keep the faith that this will all be over "soon, and very soon, we are going to see the king!" bounce/

Just my thoughts for what they are worth!

By the way, someone mentioned on this thread that Oprah's last show is in September, but according to Oprah.com, her show ends in 17 days. See the link below.

Say goodbye to depression, and HELLO to blessings!

Michael Jackson Death Trial: See You in September

Mon., May. 2, 2011 10:38 AM PDT by JOSH GROSSBERG

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images
When it comes to getting his day in court, hopefully the fall will be it for Dr. Conrad Murray.

The long-awaited trial for Michael Jackson's physician, which was originally set to kick off next week with opening statements, has been moved to September after the Los Angeles judge presiding over the case granted a request for a delay from Murray's attorneys.

RELATED: Five Shocking Things Heard During the Michael Jackson Manslaughter Hearing

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor declared he's suspending this week's jury screening process and dismissing all potential panelists who filled out lengthy questionnaires after the cardiologist's camp petitioned for the postponement, saying they needed more prep time to cross-examine prosecution expert witnesses.

In ruling on the motion filed over the weekend, His Honor said it was the fair thing to do so Team Murray could resolve all outstanding issues in mounting their defense. That includes countering testimony of a "preeminent anesthesiologist" whom the D.A. plans to call in order to show that the King of Pop could not have given himself propofol orally.

Pastor ordered Jackson's personal physician to stand trial in January on an involuntary manslaughter charge after Murray was accused of injecting the entertainer with a lethal dose of the sedative on June 25, 2009, resulting in Jackson's death.

Murray, who also had his medical license suspended, has pleaded not guilty.

NO HE IS NOT DEAD..

Thank you all4loveandbelieve. People, please have a little faith. It can't all happen like you expect...it's not in our control after all. Blessings :)
This is exactly why it is so hard, because it's not in our control at all but at the same time we are effected whether we want or not.
voiceforthesilent and all4loveandbelieve you guys are really nice that you want to make us feel better, I appreciate it, but for me this hoax is upsetting since the beginning. I can stay away from the hoax for shorter or longer periods, but it doesn't solve anything. Who knows, maybe we never will know what happened - as we are not in control, not in the know. We are just waiting and waiting and spending our energy and time with it.

Exactly spend your energy in more important stuff in your life. Yes Michael is important but we all do have a life, and we all do have a family and friends. Life is very short so enjoy every moment . Spend time with them go out to watch a movie. This hoax is upsetting for all of us, but yet entertainment. You have to admit some stuff are funny.  I feel bad for most of you who are losing faith and getting upset over this trial. How can there be a trial if noone has died??? Please explain??
Thank you all4loveandbelieve. You are very kind. And this is exactly I plan to do: spend less time with the hoax.
I just want to tell that I really don't find anything funny in this hoax. This forum is a nice place, we have fun here sometimes, but it's not because this hoax is partly funny (I mean for me it's not), it's because we need to relax sometimes.
Probably noone died, but we cannot be 100% sure, we don't know it, we just think/believe/hope that Michael is alive. But we don't know. The later Michael comes back (if he ever does) the later we will know the truth.
Okay, maybe there will be no trial and he will come back before September, but maybe he won't come back ever.
I should care about Michael much less - then I could feel better, relax. But as I want the best for him, I just can't be so calm and patient because who knows what is going on. Again we can't be sure he is alive, maybe this hoax is not Michael's hoax and some people are fooling with us. And if the last one is the case, then I don't want to be fooled for years.

I have to say I was pretty bummed yesterday over this- then my head kicked in again.  I am wondering if the trial is indeed tied to the return now. Maybe, if it is not, and no trial will happen, this avoids screams about MJ taking the justice system "hostage" and spending taxpayers money (even if he is not- you know some people will howl about it).

So- we have heard so much about the trial...and there has been so much lunacy and over the top news about it- such as the "Murray wants a pig in court" news this Friday.  Well...maybe, the return will happen- and with the trail being pushed back, it (trial) never has to start.  But all the prelims and odd circumstances and evidences can still be part of the overall project.

I don't believe this trial was ever planned to take place, it's all just part of the show (you can't have a trial if the person isn't dead - lol!), July is the month MJ returns, by all accounts the 4th - independence day!!!

I am trying to read up and understand.
Sorry for asking (there is a LOT of text on this forum) - may I just ask about the courtcase because I have difficulties wrapping my mind around it....

So this is just like a show with paid actors?
What I don´t get is - surely the lawyers and the judge and the Police are "real"? Or media would definitely find out.
Are they not involved in the hoax or do you think they are paid off?

Sorry, just curious but very grateful if you could help me understand :)))

The only thing we know is that this is a hoax, we don't know if the trial will actually occur or not...we don't know who is involved or not (except for Dr Murray) and we don't know if the judge knows or lawyers or if they are paid or not....I hope this answer helps.  :)

i don't know what to think about the trial taking so long any more.
the casey anthony case has not gone to trial yet and it has been around 3 years. they are i guess just now staring to pick a jury. another one where i  can't figure out how they are gonna find one with all the publicity.

Yeah but Caley was also missing for a year and they lacked damning evidence to charge anyone for over a year and a half so it's apples n oranges.

It's hard to compare cases but one thing is for certain, delaying for 4 months because the prosecutor wants to spend family time over the summer is... odd.

Where did they say that was the reason? They never said that. They said the reason for a delay is because they need to gather more evidence and put them all together.

The reaosn for the delay is regarding evidence. The reason for 4 month delay is because the prosecutor doesn't want to be in court during the summer when his kid is with him.

I have always thought that the case of the Murder of MICHAEL JACKSON would be resolved in much more short term. I mean, come-on, we are talking about Michael Jackson! yet his case is going on even slower than if it was Jack Johnson, who sells ice-cream around the corner of the courthouse. fresse/

Didn´t the trial of Anna Nicole Smith take an extremely long time, too? More than three years, I think.
I believe that Smith´s trial was also about doctors and maltreatment.
Maybe they are overly cautious when they deal with celebrities? The eyes of the world are on them.

I think that could very well be the reason. On the other hand, if that's their interpretation of being cautious, with all the faults they made in this case, disappeared  security material, wrong spelled names etc, I don't think I want to be in their shoes. lolol/

Just because the victim is Michael Jackson, that should have no bearing on the length of time it takes for the case to go to court.  Michael is just an American citizen like anyone else. He doesn't have any more rights than any other American, so this case shouldn't be bumped up in front of other cases simply because of who the victim is.  Cases are postponed every day, and it isn't uncommon at all for it to take years before a case finally goes to court.

In the eyes of the American court system, yes, Michael is just like anyone else, and he doesn't deserve quicker justice than any other victim simply because of who he is.  Your sarcasm wasn't funny or necessary.  In fact, it was downright rude, considering I was merely pointing out my opinion on how the American justice system should handle cases.  In addition, I actually find your above comment somewhat hypocritical since I just read in another thread where you claimed that PureLove was basing their comments regarding Teddy Riley on emotions, yet you seem to think that Michael's case should be given preferential treatment simply because he is "Michael Jackson".  Michael is human just like the rest of us.  As decent of a person as he may be, I suspect that he puts his pants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us.

Michael Jackson is one of a kind, i agree JentleTouch.
But Lady Justice should be blind, i agree PeaceLove. If this does not happen, the society may as well fall apart. That's why i don't understand how can he come back after a public trial, with a real court and Judge. To me , answers like "he is Michael Jackson", "he has the power to..". "FBI helps him to" ...don't stand very well in my thoughts. Who is helped by FBI to fake my death and quit 50 signed shows? Death threatenings? I doubt.

You know what, heartphantom? Your words just made me think about something. I have suddenly realised that maybe I somewhat underestimate the situation or the system..
I mean if someone could be drowned, why someone could not be hidden. And maybe those constant delays that surprise me so much is actually exactly what I was thinking about and wanted it to be.

Well, I am with you in this since I just don´t understand...
And that´s why I asked about the courtcase in the first place.

There are two alternatives when it comes to the lawyers, the Police and the judge in the courtcase. (I am ruling out that they are actors as this would be found out pretty quickly)
1) They don´t have a clue about the hoax. In which case, when they find out, hell will break loose!! And Michael would be sued for billions if he came back - together with anyone else involved in the hoax.
2) They know about it but are "bought" which means they are committing a crime. Which also means that if Michael comes back, they would get imprisoned.

None of the alternatives sound good  :?

Michael Jackson is one of a kind, i agree JentleTouch.
But Lady Justice should be blind, i agree PeaceLove. If this does not happen, the society may as well fall apart. That's why i don't understand how can he come back after a public trial, with a real court and Judge. To me , answers like "he is Michael Jackson", "he has the power to..". "FBI helps him to" ...don't stand very well in my thoughts. Who is helped by FBI to fake my death and quit 50 signed shows? Death threatenings? I doubt.

YES!!!! EXACTLY, GonetooSoon!  (and can tell you for sure  that that Judge is damn real). The only way to deal with it is to remain in hiding.

I'm sorry you two have such black and white thinking. I think there are endless grey areas that exist on the subject.

Bec, there is no middle way, but FBI. And i don't see how Michael's death can help FBI. I've been back and forth with this and even though sounds plausible in a movie, i can't comprehend and reason it in reality. It's true i know nothing about how they operate, maybe that is why. But for starter, i don't know how a dead Michael can help FBI and why did he plan th concerts if he knew that he would be used in an operation.

I also don't unedrstand how a dead Michael can help FBI and I've said it in the sting thread.
But i understadn how a dead Michael can help Michael.
Or how a dead Michael can help the estate take control of a big fortune.

But yet I also can't understadn how Michael could have faked his death without authorities help.
