Vatican newspaper comments on popular impact of Michael Jackson's death

Vatican City, Jun 26, 2009 / 01:52 pm (CNA).- "But, will he actually be dead?" asks the headline of L'Osservatore Romano, the day after Michael Jackson died of a heart attack in Los Angeles. Today the Vatican's newspaper looks back at the pop star's life and comments on the popular impact of his death.

LOR begins its story by saying that, despite his personal scandals, Jackson is on his way to becoming a pop icon like his former father-in law, Elvis Presley; or like Jimmy Hendrix. Besides, the story notes, Jackson started his career as a member of the Jackson Five, which brought him fame even before he began his solo career.

"In those times he was still black. He hadn't started yet the process of self definition, that was beyond race, that within the years made him look no longer like an African  American man," says the article.

This path, says LOR, was "a hard human way, probably painfully marked by some severe falls, that were reflected in his artistic itinerary.”

He was original because he "intended to overcome the limits of black music, in which he had his cultural roots, arriving at some territories that were still closed to black artists."

The article recalls that “Thriller” was the best selling album in history, with 100 million copies sold. This hit made it possible for Michael Jackson to make a big difference, at least musically, the paper added.

L'Osservatore also notes that the fame Jackson acheived wasn't solely due to his singing and dancing. "Everybody knows [about] his problems with the law after the pedophilia accusations.”

Many people are mourning his death in a very emotional way, the Vatican newspaper concludes.

This article is a little disrespectful I think.  The writer says that MJ is almost an icon like his ex father in law Elvis.  Um hello he was way bigger than Elvis because he reached all races and known around the world for his music.  They conducted a survey some years back and said he was the world's most famous person.  Elvis was not a crossover artist like MJ in my opinion.  The article also saying how MJ was black back in the J5 days well he was Black all his life even though his skin changed to pale complexion.  He was still born a Black man to Black parents.  MJ didn't deny being black.  Then it says he intended to overcome the limits of black music.  No disrespect but black artist basically influence all music even Elvis.  I heard MJ didn't even like pop music.  Elizabeth Taylor started the King of pop thing.  I don't understand why this article needs to point that out.  Also bringing up the pedofile issue contributing to his popularity is rude.  I agree about the pot calling the kettle black but in MJ case he was proven innocent and there are still people in this community getting away with it sad to say.

The pope thinks that he is an icon.
But what did he do?
He is just an old man.
Sorry for being critical.
The Church is ruled by man.
What is the place for woman in the vatican church?
Cleaning lady's?
Perhaps the pope could change that while he is head of a man ruled vatican.
Make woman more important.
Perhaps time for a woman to be pope?
Let the people of the church vote for the next pope.
That would be intresting.
Have a nice day.

What exactly does the Vatican stand for? How much good does it do in the world? I personally think it's a pretty corrupt institution... And that's ALL it is.

I agree, if any one saw the Davinci Code, and Angels and demons it  explains everything. I am italian, and I do know more or less about the Vatican. The Vatican is it's own state not an institution, even if it is in ROme,this goes far back since 1929. The Vatican is kind of a mafia of it's own. (Not a bad mafia meaning killings and so forth meaning they rule the world. They have a lot to hide that is for sure. I also know that they are involved in freemason. If you notice the Priests are not too kosher either. Some do molest children, or they are involved in children pornography. I honestly think they should keep quiet and see what is going on into their own world. Blessings.

They mean by self-definition, or beyond race?, The Vatican speaks as Michael start bleaching their skin on purpose. Famous for its pedophilia scandals, not Michael is famous for its music, and the church if that is becoming known for its pedophilia scandals
