Sony shares tumbled below 1,000 yen for the first time since 1980 as the Tokyo stock market plunged early Monday following a dismal performance from Wall Street and amid global economic concerns.
The entertainment and electronics giant dropped 2.3 percent to 990 yen shortly after the opening bell, before recovering to 1,001 yen as of 11:20 am (0220 GMT).
Dealers said Sony last traded blow the psychologically important 1,000 yen level in August 1980 around a year after its landmark "Walkman" portable music player was released.
Sony posted a record full-year loss of 456.66 billion yen ($5.8 billion) for the year to March 2012 as it struggles with losses in its television division.
Japanese companies have blamed tough competition from rivals including South Korea's Samsung, falling prices, slow demand, the impact of severe flooding in Thailand last year, and the high yen for their travails.
The stronger yen hits Japanese exporters by making their products more expensive overseas, while eroding the value of foreign-earned profits

Sony is a very diverse company with many divisions. One of the biggest is Sony/ATV Music Publishing. There are some really interesting things about how this division came to be. Including a merger with non-other than Pye Records (are you here Front? Is this the correct Pye?)
If you read through both Wiki's for Sony and Sony/ATV you get a really good idea of the money trail we have heard about. It must have been amazing to be in on those negotiations.....just amazing. There's too much information to just talk about or paste here. So here are the Wiki's for both:

There are some really long, complicated money trails with Sony. I am sure there's so much I am failing to understand. I guess I'll put on my original, classic Walkman and just chill......drat, I don't have any cassette tapes anymore, lol.

@ wishingstar.... remember the days when your worn out thriller / bad tape would chew from being sticky and overplayed and then it would all unravel in your walkman. and you'd be all stressed, carefully plucking out the tape so as not to rip it. but then you'd get to that point where you have no choice but to just yank out that last little bit that was stuck, only to rip it... and following that you'd go to your parents stationary drawer and get some cello / sticky tape to do a 'surgery' on your precious MJ tape and carefully stick it back together.... ah those were the days...
followed by, every time you play that tape, a short piece is the song was missing...

You're so funny! Yes, the good ol'days of repair to the tape. I had the worst luck with the darn thing twisting inside the reel........
God must have been laughing at me, I'd get so frustrated. I probably bought Thriller five times.

I remember those old casette days! I stil have about 200 casettes with which I dunno what to do with... :icon_eek:
I'm so happy about the digital forms of recording music :icon_mrgreen:
However my mp3 device is from SONY and is still called "walkman" :icon_bounce:
