A show stopper: Boy suspended after imitating Michael Jackson at fundraiser
By Amy Pearson Winona Daily News lacrossetribune.com | Posted: Saturday, February 4, 2012 12:00 am

WINONA, Minn. — A 9-year-old boy at St. Stanislaus Elementary School was immediately and indefinitely suspended Thursday night at a school lip-sync fundraiser after mimicking Michael Jackson’s famous groin grab during a rendition of “Billie Jean.”

Mindy Boberg said St. Stan’s principal Pat Bowlin approached her and her son, Lenny, during the event and told her the performance — specifically the handful of times Lenny reached for his groin area to imitate one of Jackson’s best-known dance moves — constituted gross misconduct and that Lenny was suspended.

Bowlin declined comment Friday, saying the situation was an internal issue.

He said he plans to meet with the Boberg family Monday morning to discuss the suspension.

Boberg said Lenny has performed similar Michael Jackson routines the past two years without incident at the St. Stan’s event, and that the Winona Area Catholic Schools’ Parent-Teacher-Partnership approved all event performances during a Tuesday rehearsal.

Boberg said she is upset with how Bowlin handled the situation and doesn’t understand why her son was singled out, particularly because some students at the fundraiser performed acts wearing boxer underwear and others shook their “tail feathers.”

At about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Bowlin sent an email to all WACS faculty, staff and families titled “Thank you/ apology.” It read:

“On behalf of the Winona Area Catholic Schools, I would like to thank all the students, teachers, parents, and friends of our school for your support of our Lip Sync contest. So many people worked incredibly hard to make it a great event. We did have one act that was clearly inappropriate. I want to extend my apology for that situation.”

The WACS student/parent handbook states that a school principal may immediately suspend a student for gross misconduct. It defines gross misconduct as an action that “creates a substantial and unjustifiable risk of harm to another person or serious damage to the property of the school or another person, or conduct which substantially impairs the discipline and order of the school environment.”

They should've expected it. How can you imitate Michael Jackson if you don't have the occasional crotch grab? It's one of his signature moves! Next they'll be saying that he's not allowed to moonwalk  >:(

 >:( I hink we need to get on this school just like we did when they covered Michael’s name.  That little boy was only expressing himself and mimicking what he had seen Michael do.  That they think it lewd enough to suspend him is like saying that Michael’s art is lewd.  Blast it on twitter.  They’ll soon have a change of heart.  This is the kind of shit that burns me up.   *FU*

It's a catholic school....that says it all.....
We should protest or something. This is unacceptable.
I hope people won't let their kids in such schools in the future.

SpeedDeemon1987,that's why I don't understand cause this is a total contradiction or maybe it was done in PURPOSE to this boy,in order to be suspended :o  >:( !!!!!!
And it's a total contradiction cause look, they were "ok with it" at rehearsal but not "live".More than that ,his mother said that Lenny has performed similar Michael Jackson routines the past two years and then was ok   ? What is this ,a conspiracy or what  :?  >:( ??????
So let me see if I understood well  .Wearing boxer underwear and shook your “tail feathers " ( :? ) it's ok, but to moonwalk and grab you crotch is not?????  /scream/  /pull hair/

Why aren't they suspending the bullies at school ??

They should put more attention into controlling the masses rather than pick on a 9 yo boy who is learning to express himself......

Sorry, this must be a slow news day for the media........what's next?

I'm sorry - I can't condone a child grabbing their genitals! We're speaking of a PRIVATE School, and they have their own rules. If he violated them, then he must pay the price - simple as that.

I do think a teacher, parent would've gone through the routine with him, and changed it if he found it offensive. You can substituted grabbing the belt, or something.

"Grabbing your dick in front of everyone is PORNOGRAPHIC" I can't support that!

I don't think that boy actually grabbed it Tink....kids who imitate MJ usually just place their hand there, not grab it actually. Michael in fact doesn't grab it all the time, he just moves his hand to it, it's not the same thing.

Some time ago I've watched some "modern" ballet that was considered "culture" but made me blush, so vulgar it was. Who's to say what's art and what's not? It's up to each person to decide.

I've said it before, my opinion is that Michael's crotch grab is what he said: a move that comes naturally with a specific kind of music. Also, in Black or white panther dance I see it as a gesture of defiance.

Yet I can not deny this acknowledgement comes in time, after knowing him better. At first watch people are shocked, especially because that move is accompanied by other moves of the same type.
Anyway, I like it and I won't deny I like it for the wrong reasons  ;D.
MJ is not MJ without it :)! I will support my right to ask for and like the grabcrotch /woohoo/!!

@Gina - If he just placed his hand over, that's a different factor!

I'm getting so tired of how things are getting these days, you don't know what the truth is half the time.
Then you don't want the judicial service bombarded with lawsuits, which suck us all dry.

What do we do!? :(

I don't know what do we do, I know what we should do: try to change the world. Easy to say, huh??

@Gina - Change starts with each, and every one of us.

In this case, it's the parents to stand up for him!

Boberg, 9, was suspended from his elementary school for imitating Michael Jackson's dance moves.
A Minnesota mom is fuming after her 9-year-old son was suspended from school for mimicking Michael Jackson's famous groin-grabbing moves during a performance of "Billie Jean" at a fundraiser last week
Mindy Boberg says the principal of St. Stanislaus in Winona, Pat Bowlin, tore into her and her son, Lenny, immediately after the boy's Jackson act on Thursday night, claiming the crotch-clutching portions constituted "gross misconduct," the Winona Daily News reported.
"[Lenny] is heartbroken," Boberg wrote on her Facebook page. "He worked so hard on this and then to have your principal scream at you immediately after."
"And as of now we are told, he's suspended indefinitely and he won't even meet with us until Monday," she wrote.
Boberg told the newspaper she wasn't sure why Bowlin ripped her boy's Gloved One gag.
The boy has performed the routine at the fundraising event for the past two years, and school officials signed off on the act during a rehearsal on Tuesday, Boberg said.
In a grainy video of the performance posted on YouTube, the crowd of grade-schoolers mostly giggle and cheer as Lenny, wearing Jackson's signature single glove, nails the King of Pop's routine from the 1983 video.
Bowlin sent an email apology to school faculty, staff and families for "one act that was clearly inappropriate.
He told the Winona Daily News that the suspension was an internal issue and plans to meet with the family on Monday.
In posts on her Facebook wall, family friends slammed the principal for going too far.
“Poor guy... You should be very proud of him, he didn't do anything wrong,” one friend wrote.
"Someone needs to moonwalk all over the principals [sic] face!!!" another supporter said.

I agree with Tink, crotch grabbing is not something that should be allowed. My kid does performances for his school all the time and he mostly does only MJ dances, but right from the beginning I told him to put his hand on his stomach or hold his belt and not put his hand anywhere else.

If you are in a co-ed school it is important to not have suggestive gestures like this that can get misunderstood. Kids are supposed to enjoy their life, not create controversy and it is upto the parents to teach them.

Michael did his crotch step in a very subtle way, he mostly touched just one tip of his finger and the rest of his hand was away. I think only in a few angry performances like the black panther, he actually rubs his hand over. As the choreographer in TII said Michael never really moved his balls. But have you seen the guys who copy Michael, like Jamie Foxx for example, lewd, the way they swing it around and then say that it was MJs step.

Back to the school though, Catholic schools are mostly run with donations, so if a benefactor was in the crowd and took objection, the school would have to take a stand like they did. Or maybe the kid and his mother did not have the crotch grab in the rehearsal, I know parents do that, leave the objectionable or entertaining parts out for effect later. Anyways when things are reported in the media, it is very hard to believe what is right.

Yesterday a kid (with his parents) in my son's school got the PT teacher arrested because he said the Sir asked him to massage the sir's broken finger for 45 minutes and he reached home exhausted and unable to do anything else for the day.

I wonder if that school is the same strict when comes to bullying.

I can´t believe that in the year 2012 a dance step can be censored when there are kids and adults scratching their parts when itches in front of every 1! Go to wallmart...show must go ooonnnn!!!

There is nothing sexual in that grabbing.
