Title: I don't understand Jermaine's statement

From his book YANA:
"In late 2008, he [Michael] was so fit that, further down the line - eight weeks before he died - when he bumped into a friend in a doctor's office, he lifted his shirt and said, "Have you seen my six-pack?""

How does this match?

He says "further down the line - eight weeks before he died."
Further down the line means later on. So he wasn't saying late 2008 was 8 weeks before he died. He must have meant that Michael was fit in late 2008 all the way up until before he died.
