At least 7 dead, 101 injured in Thai anti-government clashes

A police truck burns in the background of anti-government protests in Bangkok, Thailand.

[Updated at 12:05 p.m.] At least seven people have died and 101 have been injured Friday in clashes between anti-government demonstrators and security forces in Bangkok, Thailand, hospital officials report.

[Updated at 9:49 a.m.] At least five people have died Friday in clashes between anti-government demonstrators and security forces in Bangkok, Thailand, two hospitals reported.

[Updated at 8:49 a.m.] The casualty toll in Bangkok has risen to four dead and 53 wounded in clashes between anti-government demonstrators and government security forces, emergency officials said Friday.

[Posted at 8:40 a.m.] At least two people have been killed and 42 injured in clashes in Bangkok, Thailand in the last two days, emergency officials said.

Video footage showed "at least one person lying on the floor with a severe head wound. They appear to be dead," CNN's Dan Rivers reported from Bangkok, amid "pretty fierce shooting" in parts of the city.

If confirmed, the person Rivers mentioned would make the third fatality since protests turned violent again on Thursday.

The clashes pit anti-government protesters, known as Red Shirts, against government security forces.

One person was killed and 34 injured on Friday, the Ministry of Public Health said. On Thursday, one person was killed and eight were hurt, according to the Erawan Emergency Center.

The National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), whose supporters are commonly called "Red Shirts", is a political pressure group in Thailand, opposed to the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD). Notable UDD leaders include Veera Musikapong, Nattawut Saikua, Charan Ditthapichai and Dr.Weng Tohjirakarn. The UDD allies itself with the For Thais Party, which is currently in opposition to the coalition government. The UDD claims that Abhisit Vejjajiva's government took power 'illegitimately', backed by the Thai Army and the judiciary. It calls for the Thai Parliament to be dissolved so that a general re-election can be held. They accuse the country's elite — the military, judiciary, certain members of the Privy Council, and other unelected officials — of undermining democracy by interfering in politics. The UDD is composed of both rural and urban supporters, and although the movement receives support from former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, not all UDD members support the deposed Prime Minister.

What you have just witnessed could be the end of a particularly terrifying nightmare. It isn’t. It’s the beginning.

I feel like some people want to divide the country but I must admit that I don't much about what is happening there. It's very sad that it has to go that far to be heard. I hope the situation will calm soon God willing.

We are deeply concerned about the current situation in Thailand where the Prime Minister is supported by the Ahbisit Vejjajiva military has declared a State of emergency and has begun a bloody campaign in the middle of an escalation of protests calling for new elections.

The situation is worrying that the Thai Government has closed all the media of the opposition and has given new and extensive powers to the security forces prepare for a campaign of violence against the red shirts occurring. Thai troops are using excessive force including tanks and live ammunition against demonstrators in Bangkok.

The United Front for democracy against dictatorship (UDD) or better known as red shirts has relaunched since March massive protests against the Government not elected and by the military Ahbisit. This prodemocrático movement is integrated by poor people from the countryside and cities who stood up against the rule of the oligarchy installed by the military.

The current crisis began in September 2006, when the military staged a coup against the Government of Thaksin Shinawatra, abolished the popular 1997 Constitution and replaced it with a Constitution approved by the army. Yellow shirts royalists began to organize fascist demonstrations when supporters of the pro-Thaksin party won the 2007 elections. The current Government of Ahbisit was released by the military after the fascist demonstrations of the yellow shirts and a stroke of the courts.

The Government, the army and the yellow shirts are afraid to confront real, democratic elections because they know that they lose since the majority of the poor support the red shirts. Ahbisit and the elite in power do not want to talk about elections and attempt to gain time and even prepare for a violent clash. It is increasingly clear that Ahbisit and the old elite are leading the country towards a fascist dictatorship.

Thailand has entered a new phase of class struggle. The old ruling with the support of the military elite is using all the means at its disposal to abolish democracy in Thailand. The prodemocráticos red shirts include most of the class worker, peasant and poor has shown its true popularity and strength change definitely has shaken the royalists and the military. With the broad support of the masses to the red shirts, could be a new and important step in the fight of ordinary people in Thailand for the restoration of democracy and social justice

We call a:

* The immediate resignation of the Government as Ahbisit by the
military and call for new elections.

* A height of all forms of violence against the demonstrators
of the red shirts. I respect the right of the people of
organize, protest, and strike.

* A high in the Suppression of democratic rights and reopening of
the media.

* The Thai Government not to resort to any military coup.

The current crisis in Thailand only be resolved through a genuine democracy and popular power. We send our support and solidarity to all the workers, peasants and Thailand poor struggling against the undemocratic Government and for the restoration of a true democracy.
