Jacksons prepare 16-city tour without brother Michael, 3 years after his death

Derrik J. Lang, The Associated PressJun 20, 2012 05:52:00 AM

Quote
BURBANK, Calif. - Guided by a thumping bass line from their backing band, the Jackson brothers strut forward to a row of four microphones, thrusting their pelvises along the way, before launching into "Can't Let Her Get Away," a song their superstar sibling released on his "Dangerous" album. If they had afros and matching powder blue suits, it might feel like 1977 again.

It doesn't. They're casually sporting sunglasses, workout gear and a few more pounds than when they, along with the future King of Pop, were simply known as the Jackson 5. (Also, "Can't Let Her Get Away" was released in 1991 after the group fizzled out.)

Nearly three years since Michael died while preparing for his comeback tour, four of his brothers — Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie — are set for their own return to the stage as The Jacksons. It hasn't been easy.

"The brothers don't know this, but I've broken down several times and cried during rehearsals," said Jermaine during a recent rehearsal break on a soundstage in Burbank, Calif. "I'm so used to Michael being on the right and then Marlon, Jackie, on and on. It's just something we never get used to."

The brothers are launching their "Unity" tour on Wednesday, five days ahead of the third anniversary of Michael's death from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol on June 25, 2009.

"For me, this cycle that comes around every year — this day, that day — that doesn't affect me because it affects me every day," said Marlon. "When that day comes around, it's the same. You learn to live with it. I still wake up sometimes and go, 'Jeez. I can't believe my brother's not here.'"

Following Michael's death, the four brothers appeared in the A&E reality series "The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty," which chronicled their loss and attempt to stage a comeback before their brother died.

Jermaine said the brothers have wanted to reunite on their own for years, but after Michael's passing, they needed time to heal — and the tour is another step in that process. They're rearranged their classics to suit their voices, and Jermaine said the group plans to pay tribute to Michael during their shows with a slideshow and medley that will conclude with the tune "Gone Too Soon."

"There's certain songs that make you feel the sorrow," said Tito. "Then again, there are other songs that bring so much joy and happiness, such as 'ABC' and 'I Want You Back' and the up-tempo stuff like 'This Place Hotel.' I just imagine how he used to walk and spin and do all these things. You can feel his presence here."

The Jacksons' tour kicks off at Rama Casino in Ontario, Canada, and is scheduled to end July 29 at the Snoqualmie Casino Amphitheater in Snoqualmie, Wash. Other stops include Detroit's Fox Theatre, Los Angeles' Greek Theatre and the Harlem's sold-out Apollo Theatre, where the Jackson 5 won an amateur night in 1969 before rocketing to fame.

Michael later forged unprecedented success as a solo artist. His superstardom was unrivaled, and his brothers couldn't capture similar acclaim or sales with their solo projects or last studio album, 1989's mostly Michael-less "2300 Jackson Street," but their legacy as a group has remained unchanged. The Jackson 5 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

While various combinations of the brothers have reunited to perform over the years, including at last year's "Michael Forever" tribute concert in Wales, "Unity" will mark the first time the brothers have toured together since their final "Victory" outing in 1984. (Marlon said Randy, who officially joined The Jacksons in 1975, elected not to join the tour but noted that the youngest Jackson brother was welcome at any time.)

"We have a certain magic," said Jackie. "Once we get out here and run it down a couple times, it comes back to you. I'm not (moving) like I used to, but we still got it."

Will the fans think so — and will they turn out to see The Jacksons, whose ages now range from 55 to 61, perform their hits without Michael.

Last year, Cirque du Soleil launched "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" in Las Vegas. The show featuring dancers and acrobatic acts performing routines set to M.J. tunes has been among the top touring acts this year, and "Immortal" will return to Vegas for a residency at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

However, Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief of concert industry trade publication Pollstar, doesn't believe The Jacksons will achieve similar success with their smaller endeavour.

"The Jacksons were really all about Michael," said Bongiovanni. "The Cirque du Soleil show was successful because it was Cirque du Soleil and Michael's music. I don't know if that portends much for the remaining brothers and their ability to generate enthusiasm for ticket sales."

The brothers are undaunted, hoping to release an album of new music then go back out on tour.

"It's like riding a bike," said Marlon. "You never forget, but you do need to tweak a few things."

I'm thinking back of the part in This Is It where Michael said to Orianthi "This is your time to shine" and this could also be applied to his brothers. This is their time to shine (again) without the presence of Michael. In hoax sense it could mean that before/if Michael returns they have been able to revive and shine and continue to do so.
And..during "Michael Forever" in Cardiff they did a great performance, it rocked!  :icon_bounce:

Yes, thank you Emulik. It makes me a little saddened too but there is still too much to ignore over the last 3 years.

Everlastinglove_MJ - I thought of that too over the last couple of years, that Michael knew how his stardom outshone his brothers and no matter the attempt they couldn't break free of the past. I do believe Michael was giving them all a chance to shine (including Paris) which to me sounds like something Michael would do (not knowing him of course). Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Mjj4ever777 - thanks for sharing that picture. I wish them well in their endeavor. I believe there is purpose for that and it's not all selfish gain. I believe when BACK said it would be a TAKEOVER that it didn't just mean Michael. I think Michael invited the whole Jackson clan along. If in doubt, look at all of the younger Jacksons since June 25, 2009 and even Omer Bhatti. Things don't happen overnight. It was all being planned for a long time.

Blessings

First of all, Michael WAS the Jackson 5.  They would never have had such success without him.
As for Jerm, I've always felt he was jealous of Michael.  Every interview he's done, even pre June 25th, 09 - he never failed/fails to say how much their voices are alike, how he & Michael were the leads, etc.  Sorry, but he doesn’t light a candle next to Michael's unbeatable voice/talent.  And I'll bet he sings ALL of Michael's parts on this tour.  I have no interest in this show whatsoever.
One other thing that bothers me about Jerm; he cried like a baby on their reality show over leaving the Jackson 5, and how he felt unwanted by the bros when he wanted to come back. Yet... he left on HIS on his own free will.  I think he thought he was too good for the band.  My problem with this, he didn't cry like that the day his brother 'died'!!!  Not a fan, sorry.

I guess I felt sad, not because I suddenly think MJ is dead, but because I cannot imagine watching these Jacksons concerts, no matter how good I'm sure they'll be, without being painfully aware the entire time of Michael not being there. Now, if he is shown, one day maybe, sitting in the audience, really, as himself, not in some ambiguous disguise, singing along, and cheering and applauding his brothers, because he REALLY doesn't want to get on stage again but does want them to have success and enjoyment from continuing to perform live, then I could happily cope with that!

I watched the Bucharest Dangerous dvd again last night because I needed to see him performing! The energy, the life, the power - totally mind-blowing!

But it's not good for me to watch the TII bonus material anymore - I'm just really sad if the brilliance that was planned for this 'make-believe' concert was just that. Make-believe. For a movie.

Sorry, but these are the feelings that get stirred up in me, seeing and reading about the Jacksons on tour.  But I do send them all my best wishes! Life 'without Michael' has got to be even harder for them than for us.

Btw: I read that the brothers took turns in singing Michael´s parts of the songs but it was mainly Marlon and Jermaine singing them.

May be the reason Jermaine didnt cry the day his brother "died" was just simply that Michael didnt die!   :smiley-vault-misc-150:

MJ has had relationship strains with all of his siblings and so have i with my siblings. its called being a family and is part of life being a sibling. Please dont bash Jerm. a) he is talanted, b) on 25.06.09 he was playing a role and did well, but cant completely hide that lovely big smile of his c) mj LOVES loves his brother because if he didnt he wouldnt be relying on them to help him pull off the biggest hoax in history. He trusts and loves his brother with his life, meaning that we shoudl respect Jerm too.

NB: Jerm is not the only non emotional family member of the Jackson family since michaels "death" - the whole family are out of character. this should be viewed as a good sign, amongst all the other pieces of hoax evidence.

agree with you that MJ is the most talanted of the family. but the jackson 5 was a group effort. all of those little boys practiced their butts off equally as hard in that little house in Gary... yes ultimately MJ was most successful, but the jackson 5 deserves full credit as a team where due...

I think that Michael is re-vamping (or trying to) his brothers careers on purpose.  He is giving them a chance to "shine", their moment in the spotlight again,  and of course the opportunity to stand on their own and make their own money, lol.  They would have NEVER had any significant comeback without Michael having exited the scene.  Now they are writing books, etc.  I'd say that's extremely clever (and loving) of MJ.  Now what they choose to do with these opportunities is a horse of a different color.

I don't see why fans are reacting that way, as if they can't do concerts without Michael... They are all talented and without his borthers, you most likely never would have heard about Michael either, so show some respect. They are great musicioans and if you think it's not worth the ticket, just don't go. Jermaine jealous of MJ? In some things maybe, in other things definitely not. Jermaine can walk the streets without getting raped by hundreds of women. Just stop dissing his brothers.

you are welcome Everlastinglove and voiceforthesilent! :) I like the way how you both thinking!
I think you are so right with saying that now is the time to shine for others (dancers in TII, Orianthi, the brothers, Janet in her new upcoming role in the movie)
