Spanish protest movement vows to fight on
May 30, 2011, 11:23 GMT
Madrid - The young people's protest movement that has gripped Spain for two weeks remained
defiant on Monday, with protesters vowing to continue occupying squares in several cities.
Hundreds of people staying at Madrid's central Puerta del Sol square will remain there for the
time being, said a spokesman for the movement, known as M-15 (May 15).
Madrid's conservative regional authorities and Puerta del Sol shopkeepers have urged Prime
Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's Socialist government to disperse the protest camp.
Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said he will discuss eventual measures against the
camp with police representatives.
Police last week temporarily dispersed a similar protest camp in Barcelona. About 100 protesters
were injured in the clashes, which sparked a new wave of sympathy for the M-15 movement.
Protesters who have returned to Barcelona's Catalonia Square announced over the weekend that
they will stay put at least until Tuesday.
Demonstrators in Seville, Valencia, Santiago de Compostela and Bilbao also said they would
maintain their camps.
However, the protest movement was increasingly moving from central squares to neighbourhood
assemblies. In the Madrid region, more than 20,000 people attended around 120 weekend
assemblies discussing proposals to improve Spain's political system, according to figures given by
organizers.
The M-15 movement seeks a reform of Spain's democracy, which it sees as corrupt and as serving
the interests of financial markets. The movement was sparked partly in reaction to Spain's 20 per
cent jobless rate. Among young people, unemployment exceeds 40 per cent.
The movement has already collected more than 250,000 signatures from supporters, according to
representatives in Madrid. It has also spread around Europe and Latin America, with about 40,000
people attending a rally in the Greek capital Athens over the weekend.
In Paris, police dispersed about 1,000 people who had gathered on Bastille Square to protest
against unemployment and corruption.
