MJ Family Offended by 'A.I.' Pepsi Moment
3/31/2011 11:40 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

UPDATE: Idol contestant James Durbin just tweeted, "For anyone talkin..I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it..." and then followed that up with, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."

Michael Jackson's family is offended by a comment made on "American Idol" last night by a contestant, who made light of MJ's devastating injury that triggered years of drug abuse.

If you saw the show, James Durbin told Ryan Seacrest after his performance, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around -- so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

The "Pepsi moment" is a reference to the 1984 incident where Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial, severely burning his scalp -- an injury that triggered an addiction to prescription drugs that may have ultimately taken his life.

A Jackson family rep tells TMZ, "We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death."

The rep says Joe was particularly upset that producers didn't take the remark out of the West Coast feed.

Okay, this is strange. I follow James Durbin (@JDurbinAI10) on twitter, and I don't see that tweet anywhere. He could have deleted it, but why?

Too soon to talk about MJs passing... Indeed.

Poor James- I hope he knows he didn't do anything wrong. I know this is a TMZ attention grabber- b/c there is so much Michael disrespect out there, but this was not disrespectful!

3 things come to mind when reading this latest TMZ article:

1. MJ related American Idol articles!
What is TMZ trying to tell us?
We had:
--> Another 'idol' Player Jumps Ship for Jay on 5/27/10
--> La Toya wants to replace Simon Cowell on 1/18/10
--> "American Idol" Finalists Judge Lawyers on 2/23/11 (See the reference to  Coca-Cola, Sony and The Eagles)
--> 'Idol' Finalists: The Haunted Mansion Wasn't Haunted!
--> 'Ghost' Crew -- We NEED to Investigate 'Idol' Mansion!
--> Demi Lovato -- I've SEEN A GHOST!!!!!!! | TMZ.com
--> 'American Idol' Contestants Flee -- HAUNTED Mansion!

See related video below for further information on those articles:
[youtube:2b3kahpa]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAscTcJcx10[/youtube:2b3kahpa]

2. The Pepsi Accident
We know that the Pepsi accident happened on the 27th January 1984
29th August 1958 to 26th January 1984 --> 9282 days --> 9+2+8+2 = 21 --> 21 = 7+7+7 --> 777
27th January 1984 to 25th June 2009 --> 9282 days --> 9+2+8+2 = 21 --> 21 = 7+7+7 --> 777
We know that the numbers are of relevance to the Hoax!
The words used in the TMZ article are "Pepsi moment", it is a rather interesting choice of words! It does not really relate to an accident but to a much more light hearted event, " OOOPs! I just had an "Old Man" moment!"  ;)

3. "...It's nothing to make light of"
For some reasons (That may include having been a beLIEver for too long!) when I read the sentence "It's nothing to make light of", I see the word LIGHT and I think of LIGHT MAN and LIGHT MAN (Michael) being the one who will bring us LIGHT when he returns.

This phrase:  â€œI guess youll take it how you want it..." that’s just the point!, I mean the media can make or break you. The power of the media how the news is shown to us, e.g. the Pepsi commercial video, which is attached afterwards (great catch Yulia).

So it seems like the comment on AI was a set-up! This hoax is so under control.
In Canada we refer to it (Pepsi moment) as, "having a senior moment."

The only "SOURCE" for this information that the Jackson family is offended by this, is TMZ.  Even ABC.com is reporting it, with their source as TMZ!

Why would the family get so upset about this, when I don't remember anyone even commenting about this exchange between Larry King and Craig Ferguson on Larry King Live, October 13, 2009! (Barely a month after MJ was "buried")
[/b]

L. KING: What do you make of the whole Michael Jackson thing?

He's still dead, by the way.

FERGUSON: Yes, I -- well, in what way do I make of the Michael Jackson thing?

L. KING: The whole furor.

FERGUSON: I -- oh, boy, isn't that something?

(LAUGHTER)

L. KING: Good line.

Disrespectful stuff is being said all the time.   Why would they pick this one comment from "American Idol" to respond to?

This is just another thing keeping "Michael Jackson" in the news.

TheRunningGirl!!!!!!! It's good to see you posting again :)

Thank you for sharing this information. I watched AI last night and I didn't see anything offensive about it and I get offended ALOT at what people say in regards to MJ.

It was obvious he wasn't poking fun at MJ and I highly doubt that the family was as offended as it was being made out to be. There has to be more to this (once again).

On a side note, what struck me last night is how, after 25 years, that one incident (Pepsi accident) is still so well known that one phrase identifies it.

I agree with what everyone has said. Pepper - I'm looking forward to spending time going through what you posted. Blessings.
