'Michael Jackson Was Charming But damaged': Elton John

Elton John has opened up about his friendship with Michael Jackson, describing the late music superstar as, "charming, sweet, lovely — but damaged." The 63-year-old chart topper recalled that sitting down to eat with Jackson proved to be a unique experience for the King of Pop.

"He came down here and we closed all the curtains and had lunch. He said it was the first time he'd sat down and had a meal with people for 10 years. He would always eat on his own," John revealed to the Telegraph. The Candle In the Wind singer said he was concerned about the strain Jackson put himself under. "I remember talking to Michael once when he did Thriller and I said, 'How are you going to top that?' He said, 'Oh, the next one's going to do twice as much' and I thought, 'Michael, it's not. You can't. You put so much pressure on yourself.'"

"This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." – Sir Winston Churchill

I'm so thankful to Elton John! I think he saved Michael's life after the 1993 allegations. He gave him space to recover. When he says Michael "was damaged", I think he saw Michael in the worst or one of the worst states ever. He really helped him!

has the same flavor as the o thing about not wanting to be like michael (putting too much pressure on one's self). perhaps to suggest this would lead to dependency to cope?

Why not just tell people I'm an alien from Mars? Tell them I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight. They'll believe anything you say, because you're a reporter. But if I, Michael Jackson, were to say, "I'm an alien from Mars and I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight," people would say, "Oh, man, that Michael Jackson is nuts. He's cracked up. You can't believe a single word that comes out of his mouth."

I can think of something that would top Thriller...  ;)

You lift my feet off the ground
Spin me around

You make me crazier, crazier
Feels like I\'m falling and I

I recently heard that 'Blood On The Dance Floor: History In The Mix' by Michael Jackson is dedicated to Elton John because he helped Michael overcome drug problems. If you look in the album booklet there is a thank you to Elton there as well. I was just wondering if anyone had any info about this..What drugs Michael was on, how Elton helped him etc.

Michael was addicted to pain killers. Elton, who'd gone through rehab himself, saw a friend in need and helped him get the help he needed, and had Michael live at his home to "hide out" from the paparazzi.
Does anyone know anything more about that? That album came out in '97.

God bless Elton John.  I have always loved him.  He is a genuis in his own right.  And I agree with him.  Michael put himself under too much stress, and being alone, is never a good place to be especially for someone with the energy Michal has.  Without an outlet, it could eat him alive.
