Etymology: Used on E! Channel's "The Soup" on March 3, 2006 in the "Hollywords" segment. It was in reference to Oprah's withdrawal of support for James Frey's memoir "A Million Little Pieces" after it was revealed that his story was grossly exaggerated and (in parts) fictional.

Getting the noprah automatically ruins your career as a writer.

A Million Little Pieces
A Million Little Pieces is a semi-fictional memoir by James Frey. It tells the story of a 23-year-old alcoholic and drug abuser and how he copes with rehabilitation in a Twelve Steps-oriented treatment center.

Controversy
After a six week long investigation, The Smoking Gun  published an article on January 8, 2006 called "A Million Little Lies". The article described fabrications in Frey's account of his drug abuse experiences, life, and criminal record. According to CNN, The Smoking Gun's editor, William Bastone, said "the probe was prompted after the Oprah show aired". He further stated, "We initially set off to just find a mug shot of him... It basically set off a chain of events that started with us having a difficult time finding a booking photo of this guy". (where is Conrad Murray's mugshot?)

The Minneapolis Star Tribune had questioned James Frey's claims as early as 2003. Frey responded then by saying, "I've never denied I've altered small details."

Stories surfaced about Random House, publisher of A Million Little Pieces, deciding to give full refunds to anyone who had purchased the book directly through it. According to a Gawker.com report, customers could have a claim to money if they truly felt deceived by Frey. Speaking in March 2009, on City Talk to Trisha Goddard, it was stated less than 2,000 claimed a refund.

In an article detailing the book, Frey is quoted saying he "stands by the book as being the essential truth of my life". However, on January 26, 2006, Frey once again appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and this time admitted that the same "demons" that had made him turn to alcohol and drugs had also driven him to fabricate crucial portions of his "memoir"; it first having been shopped as being a fiction novel but declined by many, including Random House itself. Winfrey told Frey that she felt "really duped" but that, "more importantly, I feel that you betrayed millions of readers." She also apologized for her previous telephoned statement to Larry King Live — during Frey's appearance on that show on January 11, 2006 — that what mattered was not the truth of Frey's book, but its value as a therapeutic tool for addicts. She said, "I left the impression that the truth is not important." During the show Winfrey debated Frey about everything from the number of root canals he had to the existence of his girlfriend, Lilly. Winfrey then brought out Frey's publisher Nan Talese to defend her decision to classify the book as a memoir, and forced Talese to admit that she had done nothing to check the book's veracity, despite the fact that her representatives had assured Winfrey's staff that the book was indeed non-fiction and described it as "brutally honest" in a press release.

The 5 R's of Journalism
Reading, 'Riting, 'Rithmitic - the 3Rs - was the way in which basic public school education was once described. The "5 Rs" is an easy way to remember the basic tenets of creative nonfiction/immersion journalism.

The First "R" - "Real life" or the "immersion" an aspect of the writing experience.

The Second "R" "Reflection". A writer's feelings and responses about a subject are permitted and encouraged, as long as what they think is written to embrace the reader in a variety of ways.

The Third "R"- "Research" which is to gather and present information, to teach readers about a person, place, idea or situation combining the creativity of the artistic experience with the essential research.

The Fourth "R" - "Reading" Not only must writers read the research material unearthed in the library, but they also must read the work of the masters of their profession.

The Fifth "R" - "Riting" (writing) part is the most artistic and romantic aspect of the total experience. After all of the preparatory (nonfiction) work is complete, writers will often "create" in two phases.

The first part of the experience for most writers is rather loose and spontaneous and therefore more "creative" and fun. The second part of the writing experience - the "craft" part, which comes into play after your basic essay is written - is equally important - and a hundred times more difficult.

And very interesting about that book.. I LOVED that book. And it reminds me of the quote in V for Vendetta - "Artists use lies to tell the truth". It doesn't matter what the truth is about that book, if it's not really a memoir but fiction, what matters is THE MESSAGE! Just like this hoax.

This is a ridiculous statement in itself because it is based on a lie. Oprah later retracted her statement but the point is she didn't care what the "truth" was until people started to raise questions about this.

As a person in a position of power, within the media, whom many people "follow" and who is trying to influence people's thinking and promote ideas, Oprah has an obligation to present the truth and only the truth. She has not been doing that, she has an agenda and she presents things which reinforce that whether they are the truth or not. This is deception and manipulation. The question then arises what is Oprah's real agenda and why?

I understand what you're saying about Oprah. I get that completely. But the reference to the book made me think of the hoax. That guy writing a book about something that didn't happen and calling it a memoir is pretty much the same thing as MJ faking his death, calling himself dead and making a feature film and calling it a "documentary". It's all in the name of truth, even if the actual events presented didn't actually happen. I actually don't think Oprah's statement was that ridiculous, because that's how I felt after reading the book and finding out it wasn't "real". I was a bit upset at first, but realized that I still loved the book just the same and learned a lot from it. Just like people may be upset at first with Michael for faking his death. And did Oprah know beforehand that it wasn't really a memoir? Perhaps not and perhaps she read the book and felt the same way about it as I do?

But I do agree that Oprah doesn't represent truth, her treatment towards MJ confirms that. Not to mention her new network is called OWN, which is NWO backwards. I find that a bit alarming in itself. What is her agenda, or WHO's agenda is she promoting? And does she ever realize she's doing it?

I love Randy. I really do, he's my second favorite Jackson. He has always been so sensible and kind. And I think he's right about the Oprah deal.

This is absolutely right Paula! Oprah is an influential media person and it makes total sense that MJ may choose her for his "BAM" event:
-Oprah admits she was wrong ---> People will more readily make the connection with media lies
-Oprah has got large audiences and influence ---> MJ will want to connect to a large global audience
-Oprah is ending her shows in September 2011 ---> She will want to leave on a high

This article (in addition to the 5R's theories described by Jaci and Serenity - I personally like the Experiment one!) is also here to make sure that everybody remembers what Oprah did so that people can "simmer" about it for a while, then when Bam eventually comes, the effect is greater.
