5.5 Earthquake Hits Ontario, Canada
June 23, 2010, 01:11:04 PM
I live close to Toronto and felt the house shake for about 30 seconds.  Wasn't sure what was going on but it has now been confirmed as a 5.5 earthquake.  It was felt in Ontario, Quebec and some US States.  Interesting how the G8/G20 meeting is happening in Toronto.

.There are reports of unusual ground shaking in various parts of Ontario and Quebec, including Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. The Toronto newsroom of The Globe and Mail shook just before 1:45 p.m. EDT. The Ottawa newsroom was evacuated at about 1:43 p.m.

Twitter users as distant as Springfield, Massachusetts and Traverse City, Michigan reported feeling tremors. A Globe reporter in Montreal said that city also shook.

The earthquake rattled buildings in Ottawa, where the streets are crowded with office workers who evacuated their workplaces.

An eyewitness saw items flying off the shelves at a pharmacy in Gatineau, QC.

“We felt the building shake. It was actually it was pretty serious. It was definitely the strongest quake that I ever felt,” said Dennis Choquette, a Globe and Mail online editor based in Ottawa.

The shaking lasted about 15 seconds, Mr. Choquette said.

The severity of the earthquake is not yet known. It is not yet known whether there have been any reports of
injuries.

Yes we are fine here in Ontario - thanks for your concern.

Some minor damage to buildings in Ottawa and Kingston but no personal injuries that I've heard. Haven't heard any reports out of Toronto where the G8/G20 summit is being held.  But I must admit, my heart skipped a couple of beats when the ground shook.  It was worse in Quebec and vibrations were felt down in the northern US.  Any Quebec residents on line - everything OK next door?

I am in Innisfil, Ontario. 1 hr north of Toronto...I didn't feel it as I was driving on my way home, but my 4 kids in school felt it. The school pulled the alarm, and they all went out side for safty.  This was a first as far as i know in Canada.

I live it Ottawa. I was at lunch with a friend. We were actually talking about how awesome California is even though they have earthquakes when the power went out and the ground shook for like 30 seconds.

We just sat there and stared at each other. Frozen.

People in Canada are NOT used to earthquakes. It was quite a shock. Everyone got to go home from work. Haha! Government workers losing their minds... A few windows cracked downtown but that's about it.

This is all people are going to talk about for weeks now.

I am very glad that there was not injury nor death. I think we had enough of that in the past years. I am so glad also that I am not the only Canadian in this post.  LOVE YOU ALL
