Why tributes are getting cancelled ?
June 19, 2010, 01:41:20 AM
The tributes are getting cancelled and will be getting cancelled IMHO because their role is not to draw fans into a concert but to draw their attention to a certain location.

Nothing happened and will be going to happen at

* London
* Vienna
* Rome.

Who are those cities where nothing (?) takes place? Just noting a few aspects:

LONDON
"
London is a leading global city being the world's largest financial centre alongside New York City.[11][12][13]  and has the largest city GDP in Europe.[14]  Central London is home to the headquarters of most of the UK's top 100 listed companies (the FTSE 100) and more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest. London's influence in politics, finance, education, entertainment, media, fashion, the arts and culture in general contributes to its global position.
[...]
London's largest industry is finance, and its financial exports make it a large contributor to the UK's balance of payments. Around 325,000 people were employed in financial services in London until mid-2007. London has over 480 overseas banks, more than any other city in the world. Due to its prominent global role, London's economy has been affected by the global financial crisis of 2008–2009. The City of London estimates that 70,000 jobs in finance will be cut within a year.
[...]
The City of London is home to the Bank of England, London Stock Exchange, and Lloyds of London insurance  market. Along with professional services, media companies are concentrated in London and the media distribution industry is London's second most competitive sector.

VIENNA
"
Vienna is host to many major international organizations, such as the United Nations (UNIDO, UNOV, CTBTO and UNODC), the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
[...]
Vienna is the seat of a number of United Nations offices and various international institutions and companies, including the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization  (CTBTO), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). Currently Vienna is the world's 4th "UN city" (after New York, Geneva  and The Hague). Additionally, Vienna is the seat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law's secretariat (UNCITRAL). In conjunction, the University of Vienna annually hosts the prestigious Willem C. Vis Moot, an international commercial arbitration competition for students of law from around the world.

Various special diplomatic meetings have been held in Vienna in the latter half of the 20th century, resulting in various documents bearing the name Vienna Convention or Vienna Document. Among the more important documents negotiated in Vienna are the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, as well as the 1990 Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE).

ROME
"Rome's influence on western Civilisation can hardly be overestimated,[6][7]  and the city is still recognised as a centre of the arts and education.[8]  Due to this centrality on many levels, and much of the city's past and present power and influence,[8][9]  Rome has been nicknamed "Caput Mundi" (Latin for "Capital of the World")[10]  and "The Eternal City"
[...]
Rome is unique in having a sovereign state located entirely within its city limits, the Vatican City. The Vatican is a enclave of Rome and a sovereign possession of the Holy See, the supreme government of the Roman Catholic Church.
[...]
Rome is also the seat of international agencies of the United Nations, such as the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Rome has traditionally been involved in the process of European political integration. In 1957, the city hosted the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community (predecessor to the European Union), and also played host to the official signing of the proposed European Constitution in July 2004.

Rome is the seat of the NATO Defence College and is the place where the Statute of the International Criminal Court was formulated.
[...]
Rome hosts the Cinecittà Studios, the largest film and television production facility in continental Europe and the centre of the Italian cinema, where a large number of today's biggest box office hits are filmed. The 99-acre (40-ha) studio complex is 5.6 miles (9 km) from the centre of Rome and is part of one of the biggest production communities in the world, second only to Hollywood[...].

Founded in 1937 by Benito Mussolini [excurse: Soon after World War I, Rome witnessed the rise to power of Italian Fascism guided by Benito Mussolini, [...]eventually declaring a new Empire and allying Italy with Nazi Germany.], the studios were bombed by the Western Allies during the Second World War. In the 1950s, Cinecittà was the filming location for several large American film productions, and subsequently became the studio most closely associated with Federico Fellini. Today Cinecittà is the only studio in the world with pre-production, production, and full post-production facilities on one lot, allowing directors and producers to walk in with their script and "walk out" with a completed film.

Could next location for a cancelled tribute be

New York City?
"
New York City is a global hub of international business and commerce and is one of three "command centers" for the world economy (along with London and Tokyo).  The city is a major center for finance, insurance, real estate, media and the arts in the United States.
[...]
The New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street is the largest stock exchange in the world by dollar volume.
[...]
New York is a center for the television, advertising, music, newspaper and book publishing industries and is also the largest media market in North America (followed by Los Angeles, Chicago, and Toronto).

Some of the city's media conglomerates include Time Warner, the Thomson Reuters Corporation, the News Corporation, the Hearst Corporation, and Viacom. Seven of the world's top eight global advertising agency networks have their headquarters in New York[103]. The New York Times has won more Pulitzer Prizes for journalism than any other news publication.

Four "major labels" dominate recorded music —
    * Sony Music Entertainment
    * Universal Music Group,[104]
    * Warner Music Group and EMI — each of which consists of many smaller companies and labels serving different regions and markets. Three of the "Big Four" record labels headquarters are in the New York City.
[...]
The television industry developed in New York and is a significant employer in the city's economy.
The four major American broadcast networks are:
    * ABC
    * CBS
    * FOX and NBC, are all headquartered in New York.
Many cable channels are based in the city as well, including
    * MTV
    * Fox News
    * HBO and Comedy Central.
[...]
The city's television and film industry is the second largest in the country after Hollywood.

I'm not talking about dead or not dead - this question is ressolved (to us, not to the rest of the world).
I am talking about WHY these locations were choosen.
That's the key.

Re: Why tributes are getting cancelled ?

Well, I don`t think there is any other reason than the legal background which lead to cancellations:

Since the brand "Michael Jackson" belongs to the estate the family is not allowed to use his name without consent of the executors. Therefore: If family or fans acted alone to organize tributes, the estate might have intervened for copyright infringement (this is not to be underestimated since huge amounts of money are on stake). As far as I know there might be some exeptions: because of some old business deals (Dieter Wiesner!) the brand in Germany (and France as well?) belongs to someone else. But be sure the estate will do anything to get (buy) it back.

Same is with publishing rights (now sold to Sony). Therefore: no commercial use of his songs and music (even sung by other artists) without Sony`s consent. That means, organisors would have to pay for it (won`t be cheap) - and Sony might be weary to do that as well (overexposure would be deadly for the business to come). The same is true for all video and audio footage (the germans and other europeans among us know how Sony acts on youbtube).

Considering occam`s razor it`s as simple as that: MJ is a "marketing subject" right now ... and you bet, a lot of legal stuff is still be going on behind the curtain. This is business, big time.

Having said this, it won`t necessarily mean that Michael indeed died. He / they might have buried the "King of Pop", the name, the trade mark, the brand. Who says that not the person himself chose it that way?
