Celine Dion’s Oscar tribute to Michael Jackson

Superstar Celine Dion has revealed the surprising reason behind her decision to perform Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” at Sunday’s Academy Awards. The song also will be part of the Canadian songbird’s new Caesars Palace show that opens March 15. She flies to L.A. for the live ABC telecast, where she’ll sing the song as photographs of Hollywood’s elite who passed away this past year appear onscreen behind her.

The performance is a tribute to Michael Jackson, who often said it was his favorite song. Celine explained: “He changed my life. I saw him on TV, and I wanted to sing in English because he did, so I learned English and met with him and sang with him. He came to see the show and had a big impact on my life.” Michael’s brother Jermaine and friend Brooke Shields noted “Smile” at the King of Pop’s memorial service.

I will be curious to see if Michael's photo is shown during this Memoriam segment....if it is there, I find this very odd as these are the 2011 Oscars, which honor 2010 films and stars who passed away in 2010....MJ "died" half a year before 2010 even started....what is up with this? Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he might have been shown in last year's 2010 Oscar Memoriam clip....yet he's never been shown in the same segment in the Grammy's in 2010 or 2011?

ODD! ODD! ODD!

Michael Jackson News / MJ Theme Park Planned for Gary, Indiana

Michael Jackson theme park planned for Gary, Indiana
by Joel Bullock (RSS feed) on Jan 22nd 2011 at 9:00AM

A Michael Jackson theme park has been planned for the late Pop star's hometown of Gary, Indiana. The developers announced that the theme park will be part of a larger $1 billion project that will also include a museum, golf course, 300-room hotel, and a performing arts center. Spokesperson Odie Anderson shared that they hope to break ground later this year.

The theme park and surrounding attractions will be built out in phases over the next decade beginning with the museum. Eventually, the park will include rides from Jackson's Neverland Ranch and a roller coaster themed after his mega hit "Thriller". I would have thought that a Micheal Jackson theme park would have sprung up out of the remnants of the Neverland Ranch in California. But, a park in Indiana has the advantage of being closer to more of the country's population which will give more visitors a shorter trip to the park.

My thoughts? Neverland can't be a theme park because perhaps Michael is living there?

Michael Jackson News / "There Was A Hit On Michael Jackson"
« on: December 20, 2010, 11:27:59 PM »
Just got back from dinner with a very talented musician friend of mine who moved to LA from our city about a year before Michael "died" to break into the LA Music Scene....back in Dec. 09, about a month after I had seen TII but before I had ever heard a thing about the Hoax, his wife told me that the scuttlebutt down there amongst the musicians was that there was something very suspicious about Michael Jackson's death and that it had something to do with Sony....again, because I was then under the complete assumption that Michael had truly died, I thought her comments were "out there" (goes to show how far I've come in a year, huh?)....

In the short time he has been in LA, his career as a session musician has skyrocketed....even though I think he is extremely talented, I literally can't believe how quickly he's found success....my point is, he has already worked with a lot of pretty big names in the business and is in a position to have heard things...so I asked him tonight what he thought of Sony and specifically, "Do you think Sony is "evil"?"....he immediately shot me this look, like, "Hell, YEAH, I do!"....he then went on to say that he had recently had a conversation with a female record executive who had formerly worked for Sony for several years....are you ready for this?...she said that there was absolutely NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER that "There was a hit out on Michael Jackson" and she'd personally heard discussions that specifically said that "he was worth more dead than alive"!
I asked my friend if it was because of The Catalog and he said, "Absolutely, no doubt about it".

Now I'm not posting this to scare anyone or bum anyone out....just the opposite....I believe this completely supports the theory that Michael HAD to go underground....

He said there really are just three music recording companies anymore: Sony/BMG, Universal and WMG (Warner Music Group)....I worry for him actually because it seems like the business is actually dangerous....but he has a really good head on his shoulders, he's smart as a whip and has a wonderful, supportive wife...I think he can take care of himself....but it was a chilling insight to the business nonetheless....just thought I'd share some "insider" info from someone who has absolutely no reason but to tell the truth!

Producer of posthumous Michael Jackson album slams Quincy Jones

Teddy Riley claims criticism of 'Michael' is 'disappointing'
December 12, 2010

One of the producers behind Michael Jackson's forthcoming posthumous album has hit back at criticism of the project from Quincy Jones.

Teddy Riley, who has contributed three songs to 'Michael', argued that 77-year-old Jones' hearing is not up to the task of determining whether it is Jackson singing on the tracks.

Last month, Jones - the man behind classic Jackson albums such as 'Thriller' and 'Off The Wall' - told US Magazine that there is "no way ['Michael'] should be coming out".

However, Riley has hit back at his comments, telling The Guardian: "Look at his [Jones'] age. He can barely hear you talk. How the hell could he hear Michael? Anybody who says [it is not Jackson on the album], I do have a comeback, because you're not right. That's just the bottom line."

Riley added that it is "disappointing" that Jackson's family have also been critical of 'Michael', as they are set to be "reaping the benefits" of sales of the album.

Last month, Michael Jackson's brother Randy joined the row about the authenticity of the King of Pop's vocals on the record, claiming that "some of the songs are him and some aren't".

'Michael', which is released tomorrow (December 13), features guest appearances from the likes of Dave Grohl, Lenny Kravitz, 50 Cent and Akon.

Riley has already claimed that more previously unheard Michael Jackson songs will be released in the future.

Other Odd Things / Hayvenhurst ReMo....What's the Latest? Anyone?
« on: December 10, 2010, 12:40:41 AM »
I can't stop thinking about the news we heard recently that Katherine was having the Hayvenhurst property remodeled, which of course, was apparently the only way she could rid herself of her former daughter-in-law....but the timing is also very suspect to me....it is December....the Holidays....where did she relocate to?....has anyone seen The Kids lately?....shhhhhh......(I think they are all with Michael)....

Harvey, if you're reading this, how about an update?

Anyone else have an opinion? Snoopy, did you have any luck determining if any permits for the remodel had been taken out with the City of Encino?

APNewsBreak: Jackson Syringes Still Not Tested
APNewsBreak: 'Deteriorating' syringes in Michael Jackson case still not tested, attorney says
The Associated Press
By ANTHONY McCARTNEY AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES December 8, 2010 (AP)

Attorneys for the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death asked a judge on Wednesday to order testing on two syringes and an IV bag found in the pop singer's home that they say are rapidly deteriorating.

The request comes after more than a month of private meetings between defense attorneys, prosecutors and the judge to try to get testing on the items performed.

Dr. Conrad Murray's defense team has expressed urgency for the testing, saying fluids in the items are deteriorating rapidly and have become "salt" in one of the syringes.

The testing they are seeking may determine the quantities of drugs in the items, which the cardiologist's lawyers say could be crucial information during trial.

Attorney J. Michael Flanagan told The Associated Press that he submitted a motion Wednesday asking a judge to order the testing after being unable to reach an agreement with prosecutors about the testing. No hearing date has been set, he said.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death in June 2009 at age 50. Authorities say he gave the singer a lethal dose of sedatives, including the anesthetic propofol and painkiller lidocaine.

"We are running out of time," Flanagan said.

An e-mail message left for district attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Court transcripts obtained by the AP show that Murray's defense attorneys, prosecutors and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor have spoken in chambers three times about the syringes and testing.

Transcripts from those earlier meetings show Murray's defense team is willing to have the items tested by the Los Angeles coroner's office. The fluids have degraded and it remained unknown whether the proposed testing will yield useful information, according to the transcripts.
Flanagan said he had been trying to get the testing done for more than five months to no avail.

Prosecutor David Walgren had downplayed the potential value of the testing during a Nov. 4 meeting, telling a judge his office didn't concede the testing Murray's team is seeking "is relevant to anything or important."

The results of the tests are not expected to be presented during Murray's preliminary hearing, which is scheduled to begin Jan. 4. At that hearing, Pastor will determine whether there is enough evidence for Murray to stand trial on an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Walgren said during a meeting with the judge last week the hearing may be delayed a few days because of scheduling problems with witnesses. The prosecutor said he could call as many as 35 witnesses during the hearing, which is expected to last two to three weeks, according to a transcript of the in-chambers meeting.

The judge said he wanted the hearing to begin on time due to his busy trial schedule.

In a separate case, Murray retained his license to practice medicine in Nevada after reaching an agreement Friday with the state medical board in which he admitted making inaccurate and incomplete statements to the board about being current on child support.

Murray received a reprimand and agreed to pay at least $3,700 in investigation costs, Deputy Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners chief Edward Cousineau said Wednesday.

Murray's attorneys contend testing, which would establish the quantities of the drugs, should have been done along with other tests after the singer's death.

How Michael Jackson Nearly Lost His Prized Music Catalog
By Johnnie L. Roberts
Published: December 05, 2010 @ 8:40 pm

A Wrap Series: The tangled web of Michael Jackson's finances and his tumultuous 30 years of dealings with the superlawyer who now rules his estate -- the first of five parts

No one said that ruling Michael Jackson’s inner circle would be a moonwalk.

Just a year and a half after his death, lawyer John G. Branca is about to oversee the release of a posthumous album on Dec. 14 under a new $250 million deal for the estate, even as he negotiates a way out of a looming $300 million debt that Jackson left behind.

But did Branca, who had a hand in nearly all of MJ's most brilliant career and financial moves, always have his client's best interests at heart? According to documents obtained by TheWrap, the lawyer tried to help along a deal that would have dispossessed Jackson of the music catalogue he held most dear -- while making Branca considerably richer.

Branca has never embraced the limelight. But in a months-long investigation that included secret documents and two dozen interviews -- one with Branca himself -- TheWrap reveals the complicated relationship between the singer and the lawyer that Jackson would hire for the last time within a week of his death.

In that short, final tenure, Branca was left permanently in charge of one of the most important music legacies of our time.

Branca’s roller-coaster relationship with Jackson unfolds over 30 years of hiring and refiring.

It is punctuated by moments of brilliance, such as when the lawyer orchestrated Jackson's purchase of the Beatles' song catalogue, ATV Music, perhaps the most important deal of Jackson’s life.

But some might conclude that Branca is no hero at all. A deal in 2003 to sell Jackson’s interests in the Beatles’ and Mijac catalogues to the investment bank Goldman Sachs will lead some to question Branca's role in Jackson's business affairs.

Either way, his importance in the constellation of Michael Jackson’s firmament cannot be dismissed. The release within days of Jackson’s first posthumous album comes on the heels of record-setting income of $275 million in the year since Jackson died. According to Forbes magazine, the sum topped the year's list of entertainer’s posthumous earnings.

This summer, however, Branca became preoccupied with Jackson's massive $300 million bank debt, due this month, against the estate’s crown jewel -- half interest in Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

At the core of Sony/ATV’s enviable collection of rights to songs by the likes of Elvis, Bob Dylan and Eminem is to be found the Beatles song catalog, a 20th century musical treasure that Branca famously arranged for Jackson once to own outright.

Today, Sony/ATV, which Sony Corp. co-owns, is worth at least $1.6 billion, a valuation substantially attributable to the Beatles.

If it isn't refinanced, the mammoth debt -- owed to the British banking giant Barclays -- could cost the estate its grip on its half interest in Sony/ATV and the Beatles songs.

Since at least the summer, Branca has been working toward a permanent fix, and by the time this was posted, the tight-lipped lawyer already may have prevailed.

Branca had a previous encounter with the songs and the debt. From 2003 to 2004, virtually the identical financial crisis -- almost $300 million of debt, with the songs at stake -- was met with a momentous initiative by a power cast that included Wall Street-savvy Goldman Sachs, veteran music entrepreneur Charles Koppelman and a Florida entrepreneur dogged by mob suspicions, Alvin Malnik.

A cache of confidential documents from the seven-year-old episode -- a copy of which was provided by a member of the group -- reveals an intriguing inside look at the far-reaching effort, which long has been an object of media fascination and Internet-based conspiracy theorists.

The documents, which lay bare new details  while corroborating previously unconfirmed disclosures, range from trust materials and loan records to papers bearing on facets of Jackson’s dealings with Sony, where his music career was anchored.  As best can be determined, few, if any, outsiders have had access to the nearly 300-page paper trail.
In the documents, Goldman’s master financial alchemists began proposing a venture to position Jackson as “the Bill Gates of the music industry” and described how not only the $300 million debt might be whittled but also detailed how the beleaguered legend could walk away with perhaps $1.3 billion -- with the Wall Street firm exiting even richer.

More to Read: Inside Secrets of the Goldman Deal
But only if he would sell his interest in Sony/ATV and in Mijac, the catalogue of Jackson’s own hits. According to the secret documents, Goldman was prepared even to “drag” Jackson along into a deal to sell them.

As the proposal evolved during more than a year, its fundamental flaw -- that Jackson all but surely would forfeit his songs -- remained clearly obvious to Branca. More than anyone, Branca knew that owning the songs was one of his client Jackson’s great passions and that the singer worried intensely about them slipping from his grasp.

So why then had Branca worked so hard, as the secret files appear to indicate, for an outcome most feared by his client?

According to entrepreneur Malnik, Branca stood to collect $17 million from the Goldman dealings for a 5 percent interest that he held in Jackson’s stake in the Beatles’ catalog.

In a July 2003 missive on his firm’s letterhead, Branca essentially put Goldman on notice that it ultimately must assure certain of Jackson’s ongoing obligations -- “direct payment of this firm’s 5%” -- under certain circumstances if the proposal progressed.

Alas, the Goldman deal, more than a year in the making, got no further than the paper on which it was written. Rather, it was scuttled by Jackson against a backdrop of behind-the-scenes hijinks that seemed to mirror his final sad decade, which roiled with scandals, a criminal trial, epic debt and an ever-rotating inner circle.

In a statement, Goldman Sachs confirmed its role, noting that its private equity arm was involved.

“Several years ago, GS Capital Partners engaged with Mr. Jackson’s advisers when they were trying to generate liquidity under difficult circumstances,” Goldman said. “At the time, we were broadly interested in acquiring music publishing assets, and this was one of many deals we looked at.”
The bank, which wouldn’t comment specifically on its planning to “drag” Jackson into a transaction, concluded: “We ultimately decided not to pursue the acquisition of these assets.”

It was not the first time. Jackson repeatedly fired Branca whose firm Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie, Stiffelman, Cook, Johnson, Lande & Wolf is one of the entertainment industry’s most powerful.

Indeed, in June 2009, within a week of Jackson's death, Branca -- nominated in the singer's will to be the steward of his estate -- returned to the fold after a three-year break-up.

Six days after Jackson’s drug-fueled death -- having spoken to him only once in three years – he, along with longtime Jackson family friend John McClain,  emerged as co-executor of the tragic icon’s extraordinary holdings.

Conspiracy Theories / Oprah @ 2009 Bilderberg Conference in NYC
« on: October 19, 2010, 06:22:41 PM »
Anybody still trusting Oprah out there?
************************************************

A top-secret meeting of the world’s richest people to discuss the global financial crisis was held in New York on May 5, IrishCentral.com has learned exclusively.

The mysterious, media-blackout meeting was called by Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire-Hathaway; Bill Gates, co founder of Microsoft; and David Rockefeller Jr., chairman of Rockefeller Financial Services.

In addition to Gates, Buffett and Rockefeller, the attendees included Oprah Winfrey, George Soros, Ted Turner, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, among others.

It was held in the President's Room at Rockefeller University In New York at 3 p.m. on that Tuesday afternoon.

How so many giant figures in American life managed to interrupt and coordinate their schedules on such short notice, and meet in total secrecy in the world’s media capital remains a mystery -- as does the ultimate outcome of the billionaires' conference.

In their letter of invitation, Gates, Buffett and Rockefeller cited the worldwide recession and the urgent need to plan for the future. They said they wanted to hear the views of a broad range of key leaders in the financial and philanthropic fields.

Each attendee was given 15 minutes to deliver a presentation on how they saw the future global economic climate, the future priorities for philanthropy, and what they felt  the elite group should do.

According to one of the attendees, Gates was the most-impressive speaker of the day, with Turner the most-outspoken and Warren Buffet the most-insistent on his agenda for change
