Michael / MICHAEL album review
« on: December 06, 2010, 03:01:16 PM »
Well this is depressing...

Album review: Michael Jackson - 'Michael' (Epic)
Not as terrible as you may think. I mean, we're not saying it's good, but...

When Will.I.Am of all people is denouncing your project on the grounds of taste and authenticity, you know you’re on shaky ground. When your lead single is a duet with Akon, you should probably just pack up and go home. Michael Jackson couldn’t do any of these things of course, because Michael Jackson is dead.

When you go in to listen to the posthumous album of unreleased Michael Jackson songs you’re met with a 10-page document that painstakingly details the narrative of how this record is authentic, genuine and tastefully in tune with the album Jackson was already planning. But really. Nobody treated this poor, desperate fucker with any respect in the later years of his life. Why would that vultures act any different now he’s not even around to have a say?

Then you actually hear the thing and you’re met with a bizarre rush of reassurance in human decency. Oh, it isn’t really very good, don’t be under illusions of that. But compared with the unnecessary, inauthentic and insulting mess it could have been, and judged against the level at which, say, Tupac Shakur and Freddie Mercury’s graves have been danced on, ‘Michael’ can actually be considered something of a win.

The songs here are actually complete songs. Not discarded offcuts recklessly soldered together with a few guest raps to cover the joins, but full compositions sung all the way through by Actual Michael Jackson. And evidently, his voice had endured. Sure, the vocals are treated to (excuse the phrasing) within an inch of their lives. But the gleaming falsetto, the rock howl and propulsive beatboxing are all, to different extents, intact.

Thirdly, the robotic R&B that defines ‘Michael’ is probably, more or less like what Michael Jackson would have been wanting to do in 2010. Amazing as it would have been to hear him toe-to-toe with Kanye, Minaj and Rihanna, it was never going to happen because he’s chosen Will.I.Am and Akon. And most of these songs are up to his more latterday standard. Just so, it’s a myth that he ever completely lost it: even ‘Invincible’ had ‘You Rock My World’ and ‘Butterflies’ on it.

And even Akon can’t completely ruin the single ‘Hold My Hand’, a tender mid-paced love song in the vein of ‘Remember The Time’, while ‘Best Of Joy’ and ‘(I Like) The Way You Love Me’ cover similar classy/boring mid-tempo R&B territory... ‘Monster’ revisits ‘Smooth Criminal’ territory only to be ruined by an inappropriate rap from 50 Cent, while the worst thing you can say about ‘Hollywood Tonight’ is that its catchy signature gets annoying after a while.

‘Keep Your Head Up’ is sentimental mush that makes up for its paucity of tune by piling on more and more strings and gospel, and ‘Breaking News’ is appalling, Jackson at his most ‘poor me’ unfortunate over a mess of confused beats.

But then something remarkable happens. You get to track nine, ‘Behind The Mask’ and it’s an absolute revelation, a swirl of psychedelic, orchestra-twinged R&B. Jackson howls a solid-gold melody at his fearsome best, and blippy production and robotic backing vocals dancing behind it. It could sit quite happily on ‘Dangerous’. It is actually brilliant. And then there’s ‘Much Too Soon’, a delicate, pared-down ballad that dates back to the ‘Thriller’ era, but gets you in the emotion-centres in the way that Jackson uniquely could.

On the balancing strength of those two songs, ‘Michael’ manages to dodge the bullet enough to be kind of enjoyable. But it’s worth remembering that both songs date back to the 1980s. It’s also worth remembering that this is the first in a reported 10-album deal over the next seven years. And if this decent-enough album is the best of the bunch, things are going to get ugly from here on in. Michael has his epitaph now. Tear up that contract, The Jackson Estate. Tear it up now.

The Short Films & Music Videos / Visions DVD Critique
« on: November 22, 2010, 10:14:59 PM »
This is all hurting my heart. First, Hold My Hand isn't performing well on the charts at all..and now this critique of Vision.

Quote
Poor Michael. It is impossible to watch his collection of videos without feeling pity at this visual evidence of his self-destruction. In four and half hours of extravagant (over-) productions, you see the handsome, smiling young black entertainer of 1979’s ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’ gradually mutate into the stick thin, white scarecrow figure of 2001’s ‘You Rock My World’, his final official appearance. With sawed off button nose and painted on lips, by the end he barely looks human, and it seems peculiar the way the typically heavyweight cast (including Chris Rock and Marlon Brando) casually interact with a zombie in their midst.
The title ‘Michael Jackson’s Vision’, and the assertion that these aren’t promo videos but “short films”, is typical of the grandiosity attached to every Jackson project. The hits of the eighties retain nostalgic charm, but apart from the genuinely ground breaking and still impressive ‘Thriller’ few really stand the test of the time. The overlong shorts (including Martin Scorcese’s woeful Bad) are narratively baffling to a point that would be comical if they weren’t so bloated with an air of preening narcissism in which fawning guest stars gasp at Jackson’s mystical super-powers. They are further burdened by a kind of egotism of budgetary excess. As Jackson’s star wanes in the 90s, the videos keep getting bigger and madder, more bucks for less bangs

Michael / Hold My Hand not doing well :(
« on: November 22, 2010, 10:11:31 PM »

The man who co-created the new Michael Jackson single says he won't release any more of the songs they recorded together. Following the release of Hold My Hand, which failed to break the US top 20, Akon explained that the rest of his Jackson collaborations were incomplete when the singer died. "I might burn [them]," he said. "I would never put [them] out unfinished."

Released last Monday, Hold My Hand was the first official single from Michael, a posthumous collection of unreleased Jackson songs. It was the second album sample in as many weeks. On 7 November, Sony Music issued a track called Breaking News, hoping to quell rumours that some of Jackson's vocals on the album were "fake". However, not only have these rumours proven persistent – Hold My Hand has failed to light up the charts. It will be released in the UK on 28 November.

Speaking to MTV News, Akon said that Hold My Hand was one of the few unreleased Jackson tracks "that was actually fully complete". "The rest aren't," he said. "They're just ideas, concepts, and harmonies that the world will probably never see ... We've done plenty of records outside of this, but they were just incomplete ... I might just burn [them] after this interview."

This was more or less the attitude of Will.I.Am, another producer who had been working with Jackson before his death. "It's disrespectful," the Black Eyed Peas frontman said last week. "Michael Jackson songs are finished when Michael says they're finished. Maybe if I never worked with him I wouldn't have this perspective. [But] he was very particular." Earlier this summer, Will.I.Am insisted the new album "[shouldn't] ever come out". "Now that he is not part of the process, what are they doing?"

With Akon's and Will.I.Am's collaborations removed from the equation, and with Jackson's family raising questions about "Cascio tracks", it is not clear how much unreleased music is left. Certainly Sony, which signed a deal for 10 albums over seven years, will be counting on an estate vault containing "hundreds" of unreleased tracks. But instead of "new" songs, these may end up being B-sides, out-takes and alternate versions of earlier records. "There are a couple of songs we recorded for the Bad album that we had to cut that are just sensational," promised Tommy Mottola, Sony's former label head. R Kelly has also described a trove of unreleased Jackson collaborations.

Then again, Jackson's unreleased material may prove disappointing. While Hold My Hand proved a success in Sweden, Denmark and Italy, the song didn't even scrape the top 20 in the US, Canada, Australia or Ireland.

Michael, due on 10 December, contains 10 tracks, including colaborations with 50 Cent and Lenny Kravitz.

TMZ Discussion / Did MJ fake his death poll? Results...
« on: November 22, 2010, 10:00:47 PM »
Ok so I'm confused.. I was just looking at TMZ, and did they mix up the poll, or are there seriously 70% of people that think he's alive??? That just seems odd that there'd be so many. I mean I know all of the inconsistencies, but that's a pretty overwhelming amount to think that's the case.

Michael Jackson News / Sweet article
« on: November 18, 2010, 11:06:26 PM »
So I was looking through articles offered at my college and came across this one. I think it's just people that had written into the magazine, but I enjoyed them.

On June 25, the music world lost the most legendary and phenomenal entertainer of all time: Michael Jackson. The native son of Gary, Ind., gave us the most brilliant artistry for four decades ("Fans pay tribute to Michael Jackson at sites around the world," USATODAY.com, Wednesday).
Jackson's works include music, dance, choreography, motion pictures, television, concerts and other forms of art. At the same time, his unique styles converged and gave harmony to the world.
Jackson transformed music at the highest levels. One way he did that was through music videos, taking a song and telling a story in a film. His smash hits Rock With You, Billie Jean, Remember the Time and Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough are memorable.
Thank you, Michael Joseph Jackson, for being an inspiration to all walks of life. Thank you for your selflessness, for teaching others to never give up on their dreams and for being your beautiful self.
I wish you a peaceful journey. You will be missed, but Christ gained an angel.

More compassion needed
As an advocate for physically and psychologically fragile children who are often labeled "social misfits," I would like to speak up regarding our collective response to the rise, fall and "resurrection" of Michael Jackson in the courtroom of public opinion. I would like to suggest that his story line might have played out differently if the collective "we" had shown more compassion.
As a child of the 1980s, I was stunned to hear about the death of Jackson. I went home in a fog and told my husband, Alan, who was also deeply moved by the news.
Alan suggested I was a hypocrite for being so sad after the way I "vilified" Jackson after the disturbing allegations over the young visitors to his Neverland Ranch (of which he was acquitted). Alan's comments struck me because I did judge Jackson harshly without hard evidence of wrongdoing.
The only thing we know is Jackson was robbed of his childhood first by his father and then by superstardom. I am not the only one willing to forgive his transgressions and focus on his music. Jackson seemed to have it all. We put him on a pedestal.
But when he developed social and psychological issues related to not only the glare of the spotlight, but also an abusive family, many of us condemned him to the world of the weird and lost our admiration for his music.
Today, we are adoring Jackson and his music the way we should have all along. Perhaps if we had treated him with a little more compassion and had been less like the paparazzi that stalked him, his story might have played out differently.

Jackson's art, beauty
In Michael Jackson's best music and in his electrifying stage moves, he appealed to that desire in all of us to cut loose from restraints and to be truly free.
At the same time, his music and dance moves were so carefully constructed. I believe the reason his spectacular performances have been loved by millions of people worldwide is explained by this principle of aesthetic realism: "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves." That philosophy was founded by the great American poet and critic Eli Siegel.
So when Jackson was free and precise, unfettered and sure at once, it was exactly what we want to feel in all the moments of our lives. I wish he could have known this: that the very thing that made his art so fine held the answer to what he wanted in his own life.

Hey everyone,
So I was just watching random videos of Michael and came across this one. While I don't like the way the commentators have twisted his words/actions, I think there's a point in it we should look at. Maybe when he decided to 'go away' he used the drug addiction thing because it would be believable. Clearly in this video they're saying how it doesnt seem like he has any problem. Maybe it was just convenience that a plot had unintentionally been set up prior.

I have a question,

I'm not sure if this has already been answered, but I was looking back at Nancy Grace covering the case, and there's a part where they're talking about how the police raided Murray's office, and Nancy was saying she was surprised we haven't seen a copy of the warrant yet.. I was just wondering if anyone has seen it? I couldn't find it.

I guess my thought was that if we can't find one, maybe there isn't really one? This would be a way to set it up for the public to automatically think this man is guilty and to keep the focus on him. Ultimately, him being let off the hook once (hopefully) Michael returns.

It's in this video. I forget which mark, and I have to run to work. But it's somewhere in this video

This Is It / Blonde female dancer
« on: October 21, 2010, 09:28:34 PM »
Hey everyone.
I'm not sure of her name or if this is written elsewhere...
but I am watching This Is It right now, and I know it's been mentioned before about them being actresses, and watching this blonde girl dance during the Smooth Criminal portion, it couldn't be anymore obvious. She is so off beat and does not look like she'd be a dancer at all.

Hey everyone. I was just having an MJ night (as usual) and was watching videos on youtube and came across this one. At the 5:28 mark the man speaking to him says Michael Joseph Jackson. I know he isn't asking Michael to confirm or anything, but Michael doesn't make any facial expression or try to correct it.

General Hoax Talk / Michael's new album..thoughts?
« on: October 03, 2010, 11:58:19 AM »
Hey,

I was just curious as to everyone's thoughts on the new album that will be released in November. Do you plan on picking it up? Part of me says no - assuming he is in fact dead - because if that's the case, it obviously isn't going to be done the way Michael wanted it, and probably not to his standards.

As we all know he was a perfectionist, and maybe the songs they're putting out, or the producing of them/sound isn't what he'd want. As a result, I'm not sure I want to support it, and buy it.

On the other hand. I would love to have some new MJ to listen to.

What about you?
