President Lech Kaczynski and other senior Polish figures are among scores killed in a plane crash in Russia.
Polish and Russian officials said no-one survived after the plane apparently hit trees as it approached Smolensk airport in thick fog.
Poland's army chief, central bank governor, MPs and leading historians were among more than 80 passengers.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the crash was the most tragic event of the country's post-World War II history.
The Polish delegation was flying in from Warsaw to mark 70 years since the Katyn massacre of thousands of Poles by Soviet forces during WWII.
The BBC's Adam Easton, in Warsaw, says the crash is a catastrophe for the Polish people.
He says Prime Minister Tusk was reportedly in tears when he was told.
After an emergency meeting of minister, Mr Tusk, who runs the day-to-day business of government, said a week of national mourning had been declared with two minutes of silence on Sunday at midday.
He said he would travel immediately to the site of the crash in Smolensk. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir said he would go to Smolensk on Saturday as well, Russian news agencies reported.
Mr Tusk added: "The Polish state must function and will function".
A government spokesman said that according to the constitution there would be an early presidential election, and the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Bronislaw Komorowski, would become acting president.
In Warsaw, people have been gathering outside the presidential palace to lay flowers and light candles.
"I'm all broken up... it cannot be expressed in words," Ewa Robaczewska told Reuters news agency.
Pilot error?
The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT).

Smolensk regional governor Sergei Antufiev told Russian TV that no-one had survived.
"As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president's aircraft did not make it to the landing strip," he said.
"According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash."
Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Piotr Paszkowski said it could be assumed with "great certainty" that no-one had survived.
"We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland," Mr Paszkowski said.
Polish TV worker Slawomir Wisniewski said he had seen the crash from his hotel near the airport.
"I saw through the fog, the aeroplane flying very low with the left wing pointing to the ground," he said.
"I heard something being broken and then that thudding sound. Two flashes of fire next to each other."
It is unclear how many people were on board. Polish officials said the delegation was 88-strong, while local officials said 96 people had been killed.
Russian investigators had earlier said there were 132 people on the plane.
Russian media carried claims that the plane's crew were at fault for the crash.
"Flight controllers at Severnyy aerodrome suggested that the plane be forwarded to Minsk but as far as we know the crew took an independent decision to land the plane in Smolensk," Smolensk regional government spokesman Andrei Yevseyenkov told Russian TV.
Controversial figure
The president was flying in a Tupolev 154, a Soviet-designed plane that was more than 20 years old.
Our correspondent says there had been calls for Polish leaders to upgrade their planes.

Mr Kaczynski himself had suffered scares while using the plane in late 2008, when problems with the aircraft's steering mechanism delayed his departure from Mongolia. It was then caught up in turbulence flying to Seoul.
"Any flight brings with it a certain risk, but a very serious risk attaches to the responsibilities of a president, because it is necessary to fly constantly," he was quoted as saying at the time.
As well as the president and his wife, Maria, a number of senior officials were on the passenger list.
They included the army chief of staff Gen Franciszek Gagor, central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek and deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer.
World leaders including Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown offered their condolences to Poland.
Mr Kaczynski, who had fewer powers than the prime minister but had a significant say in foreign policy, was a controversial figure in Polish politics.
He had advocated a right-wing Catholic agenda, opposed rapid free-market reforms and favoured retaining social welfare programmes.

u asked how did the plane crash..well..when the pilot wanted to land he wasn't able to do it cuz there was such a big fog that he couldn't see the landing ground.. he was flying too low and there were trees... and he crashed.. :cry:
i'm just speechless.. at a one moment we lost our president, his wife and all commanders of military forces.. and they were going to Katyn to pray for those who weree killed during World War II ..now me must pray for them..

Yahoo news says it was the pilot's error.
Despite several warnings from several Russian and Belarus air controllers about extreme fog at destination, he did not follow the advice to land in Moscow instead.
Yahoo news says the plane crashed into trees at 4th attempt of landing in the fog.
Sad for the people on board.

i am also Polish, we are all in shock, this really is still unimaginable to me of what has happened
today's date also is so special, given what happened exactly 70 years ago in the same place :(
they have already found black boxes, I hope we will know what has caused this tragedy

Rossiya-24 showed footage from the crash site, with pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the red and white national colors of Poland stuck up from the debris.

Poland has been dragging its feet in adopting the euro and joining the European Union, having pushed back its target date for doing so until 2015. Here in the U.S., we might say that Poland is not a “team player.” In the New World Order, bad things tend to happen to leaders who aren’t team players.

Poland's leadership is to be admired as the only one of the EU countries that has not gone into an economic recession and is experiencing growth! My prayers go out to the families of this crash and to all the people of Poland who've lost their great leaders. I pray the new leaders will have the wisdom, insight and love for the country as all those who lost their lives. God bless Poland.

sorry guys but the only question coming to my head since yesterday is how on earth a president and his whole delegation would step in a Tupolev 154??????I bet Obama would never step in a tupolev 154 even if the world s sake was depending on it... I wouldnt even for a 10 million check...
Those planes arent safe, they are over 20 years old and keep on falling...look at all the tupolev s crash in the last 15 years...
Now the conspiracy i see here is that like always we are immediately blaming the pilot cause he cant argue anymore instead of blaming the plane. Why? Cause russia wont admit Tupolev arent safe...and this happening in their country with the polish government is a nightmare for their industry..they blame the pilot but maybe the poor guy didnt have anything working (altitude etc) in the cockpit of this 26 year old plane...I hope the polish delegation investigating the accident would be able to work free on this and come to its own conclusions
I feel sad for the victims not because they were president, head of parliament etc but because everytime a plane crash it s a tragedy. I feel really sorry for Jaroslaw who lost his twin and for the families of all the victims

Our president's body has just been transported to Warsaw.. people are gatheing on the streets to pay their honors for thier leader.. :cry: i'm constatntly crying.. it's a tragedy..a huge tragedy..
a also hope that polish delegation investigating the accident would be able to work free on this ..but i think it's impossible.. why? because Russian ppl wouldn't allow us to do so! theu will try to hide some evidences..
as to Tupolev.. well, ur right that it was an od plane.. but just w few week ago it has been renovated.. u know where? in Russia!! they renowated our plane!! so now u can clearly see that they can be behind this accident!
but on the other hand it also can be pilot's fault..some of u read that the plane was flying very low with the left wing pointing to the ground.. (witnesses say that..i said before that noone witnessed it..cuz noone saw the moment in which the plane crashed! they just heard the thudding sound! )..
i'm confused..i dunno what to think about that.. but as for now there are more important things to cope with..we have to choose new leader, arrange a funeral..

I can't believe this,yesterday my husband and I were having morning coffee and we were talking about second world war, he told me about what happened 70 years ago in this Katyn forest where all the elite of Poland was murdered by Russians. I never knew that.
In the afternoon we heard the news, how symbolic is that, another elite? What a tragedy.
My deepest condolences to the people of Poland.

For the moment we cannot be sure to whom the "crime" is beneficial. I say crime because even if an accident is possible we must admit that it is very strange. It is too early to accuse Russia. What I also don't get is why all these important people were all gathered together in the same plane ? It is very unusual. How are they going to replace them all now ? By who ? Important questions that we have to keep in mind to see what is coming next.
All my condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and to the polish people who really must be in a state of shock now. May God ease your pain and give you the strength to look for the truth.

and i didnt know where the plane was renovated.i knew that it has been renovated but i didnt know where.

It's indeed strange all those important people flew together in 1 plane, but they were alive and it was their own choise to do so.
In my country normaly the queen never flies in the same plane as her son (the crownprince), just in case something happens.

we had a very similar accident 2 years ago..but then "only" some commandors died.. and then such regulation was brought to life.. and yesterday it was broken.. :|
i really cannot understand why the hell did they get o this aircraft..:(

Now, the Polish elite dies there again.... I personally lost people with whom my institution cooperated. Those were great patriots, people who really cared about our country...
This tragedy is very, very symbolic for us.

Yes, a big tragedy... I hope this is really an accident... Buf if it's not, it's that I think, the people who make this are worse than the russians of 1940 during the Katyn massacre. Why ? Because they act in the darkness, with nobody for see them, and nobody for telling the truth. They kill, and they lie to the people of all the world.
During Katyn massacre, the context was war. But nowadays, it's worse. The context is power and money. Some people kill and then lie.
I don't say Katyn massacre is nothing, I say that nowadays, the killers are cowards, liars who pay tribute the next day with their suits and their false democracy... :cry:

There are rumours in our media that president Kaczynski personally ordered the pilot to not take a deviation to MInsk or Moscow because he did not want to be late for the ceremony.
The analysis results of the voice recorders should provide more evidence.
It's all speculation for the time being.

Yes, it happened 20 km from the place of massacre in 1940. There's a huge symbollism in it. Our President and other prominents were on their way to honour those who were killed 70 years ago. There was the anniversary celebration prepared in that place. The President was about to give a very powerful speech. We were all waiting for one word from Russian Government - "We apologise". This never said apology was an obstacle in our mutual relationships over the past decades. I am not saying about the ordinary people - Russian People are wonderful, I love them very much! I am talking about governments - because this mass murder from 1940 influenced our whole history. For decades, we were told that this murder was commited by Nazis. Until the fall of Communism - only then the truth was finally admitted.
There is a film about these tragic events from 1940 entitled "Katy?" by Andrzej Wajda - if someone of you are interested - I strongly recommend it to you. It will be shown on TV I guess, all over the world right now - to honour the memory of all the officers murdered in the Katy? forest.
Please, don't think It was a murder conspiracy - it was an accident. A very tragic and symbolic one. An eye opener for the whole world. Looks like the ghosts of those killed 70 years ago demanded to be honoured by the whole world for once and for all.

There's no conspiracy (I live in Russia). it's awful weather conditions (fog). The pilot tried to land 4 times and (they guess) the fuel was over and the plane crashed.
It's a big loss for Russians too, because it had to be very important event that could warm russian-polish relationship.

Andrei Mendierej, the amateur filmmaker from Smolensk is dead.
He was stabbed near Kijow, and transported in critical condition to the hospital in Kijow.
There three unidentified individuals unplugged him from life support system and stabbed him three more times. Andrei was pronounced dead that afternoon.
The pilot's bodies are said to be missing.
A comment on the site ctpatriot1970 claims that polish prime minister Tusk met with Vladimir Putin 3 days before the official ceremony and assumes a connection.

Andrei Mendierej, the amateur filmmaker from Smolensk is dead.

Poland Army Prosecutor Mikolaj Przybyl Shoots Himself
WARSAW, Poland — A military prosecutor in western Poland shot himself in the head Monday after defending the work of his office and rejecting planned reforms, officials and media said Monday.
Col. Mikolaj Przybyl survived the shooting that happened inside his office in the city of Poznan, minutes after he read a statement to reporters and then asked them to briefly get out.
Przybyl is a deputy head of the prosecutor's office in Poznan and the head of a local department investigating organized crime in the army.
A footage broadcast by TVN24 station, whose camera was left rolling after reporters left, shows Przybyl walking across his office and out of sight before a gunshot can be heard.
Hospital director Leslaw Lenartowicz said Przybyl is in stable condition, conscious, and his life is not in danger. Przybyl suffered injuries to the face, he said.
Chief Military Prosecutor, Krzysztof Parulski said that Przybyl was one of the "best prosecutors" and a "man of honor."
President Bronislaw Komorowski and Justice Minister Jaroslaw Gowin were closely monitoring an investigation into the shooting, their offices said.
Some lawmakers are calling for a special parliament probe into the case, saying that Przybyl's statement suggests a massive corruption problem in the army.
Moments before shooting himself, Przybyl read a statement to reporters in which he objected to plans by Prosecutor General Andrzej Seremet to put military prosecutors under civilian authority. Seremet said that such a decision was under discussion, but has not been made yet.

It may look like a hoax but the claims someone disturbed him by entering the room so his hand slipped a little bit and his bullet just destroyed his cheek...
He's in the hospital and he is fine. They say there is a war between the prosecutors (a military one and the civil one). They want to dissolve the military one... so his suicide attempt was a kind of a protest....

As to the Smolensk crash they discovered today (by identifying voices in the cokpit) that General Blasik wasn't pressuring the pilots to land no matter what... So the main thesis of the Russian Report that Gen. Blasik was drunk and was ordering the pilots to land and the pilots were stressed proves to be totally false...
