A superfan's view on Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour

It might be another Jackson estate moneyspinner, but the Cirque du Soleil show has some moving moments, says superfan Les Slater

Interview by Laura Barnett

The Guardian, Sunday 21 October 2012 18.00 BST

Confusing … Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour.

I've loved Michael for as long as I can remember. When I was 16, I took a coach from Birmingham to London to camp outside his hotel for three days. Some of us followed him to Hamleys toy shop and spoke to him outside. Michael was always happy to talk to his fans, even when his security guards told him he shouldn't.

And then it just snowballed. I saw Michael live many times, and I now know most of the Jacksons well. Over the years, I've been working on a Jackson Five tattoo – each time I meet one of the brothers, I ask him to autograph my body, then go to the nearest tattoo parlour to have it made permanent. The family know all about it: last year, they invited me to Vegas so I could get Marlon's and complete the set.

So when I heard that Cirque du Soleil was making a show about Michael, I was intrigued: the tabloids always said Michael's life was a circus, so it seemed ironic. I've now seen the show 19 times – starting with the premiere in Montreal last year, then in Las Vegas, now in London. Each time I see it, I find something new to admire.

The last time, I saw Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett – Michael's drummer, who plays in the show – look up, kiss his fingers, and blow a kiss into the sky to Michael. It's a really moving moment. Some fans say they're boycotting the show because it's endorsed by Michael's estate. They feel the estate is just making money out of the fans; they won't buy any records or merchandise released since his death, either. I don't agree with that, which is why I'm not a member of any of the official fan clubs. I think a show like this is a brilliant way of keeping Michael's memory alive.

If you're a fan of Cirque rather than Michael, though, I can see why you might find the show frustrating: the storyline's quite confusing, and there's little in the way of acrobatics. At the last show I saw, someone actually shouted out: "Do some acrobatics!" Really, the show is just about the dancing and the music – which makes sense, because that's what Michael's life was about, too.

I'm posting  this review because this is a positive review among many biased and rediculous reviews of the O2 shows I've been reading. I agree to most of what she wrote and not just because it's a review from a fan, but more because I think it is unbiased and she has made a true point here: "the show is just about the dancing and the music – which makes sense, because that's what Michael's life was about, too".

I'm just saying that this show was AWESOME, I loved it!!! Even though I watched the show from a very high seat  (:errrr: no I've no fear of heights). Even my hubby, who's not a fan but likes his music, was impressed and loved every act and song and was even woohoo-ing  :icon_bounce: next to me :icon_lol: I tried to watch with rational "hoaxy" eyes :icon_cool: though that was quite an effort because there were too many breathtaking awe moments which were often heart touching. I felt like I wanted to absorb every act, song, color, effect because this show is created and performed in such MJ detail. Amazing! What was striking is Michael's face on the screen and when a dancer hit the screen his face shattered in pieces. I haven't seen the Giving Tree/Tree of Life :icon_question: which I thought had a quite significant meaning. I don't know about the other shows but in the show on the 19th the song "Gone Too Soon" started and stopped after about 15 sec, followed by the song "I'll Be There" ..."when there is love I'll be there" :icon_cool: which was beautiful and interesting to say the least imho. "Will You Be There" was captivating with all those red lighted hearts in unity and my heart skipped a beat when MJ's hologram appeared on stage. An incredibly amazing show with Michael's presence sensible in every way.  I wouldn't have missed it for one bit and I would definitely watch the show again..probably I would see more clues then. Btw, before the show they played songs of the Invincible album :icon_e_biggrin: which was already a good start because it is my fav album. Well, this was my personal review.
Of course I'm always curious about your thoughts.

with LOVE

Thanks for the review - loved to hear about your experience!  We have this other interview someone on file but we can never have enough positive remarks about MJ so let's overload the Internet on positive instead of negative, right? :)

I went to the show here in the US in December of 2011. It was a great show but I don't remember any hologram? The Giving Tree (from what I heard) had some technical problems and they made some alterations. I thought that they'd have it worked out by now but maybe not. My young grand daughter was a little disappointed because they changed the choreograph of her favorite song (I can't remember which one now) and my grandson asked "when is Michael coming out". LOL - I kept wondering that myself, whether he'd make some appearance.

Overall, I thought it was a brilliantly done show that only the "live" presence of Michael could outdo. But IMO Michael intended on these shows as a way to give back to his fans, draw a new generation of fans, and to keep current on the trends without being in a hundred places at once or without having to travel around the world on tour.

Blessings to you :)

Thank you for sharing your experience, Voice. Yes let's overload the web with positivity:)

I'm glad to know that the Giving Tree is still there but it is just in alteration, thanks.
Obviously I was wrong about the hologram (probably wishful thinking..real MJ is even better lol). Although I've read somewhere that there are hologram plans, I must have confused it with a 3D image of Michael which is used during the show. I remember this video about the 3D during the shows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo588zbf2-Y.

So, your grandson is also a beLIEver who's (im)patiently waiting for his appearance, sweet :)

Hi I saw the show on Sunday 21st October we had very close seats to the stage and there was no hologram it was a white screen with Michael in his white shirt and black pants with his arms spread out just like he always does. The show was AWESOME the BAND was amazing, thank you "Sugar Foot" and all Micheals band members including the new members you did a AWESOME job.Thank you!

This was a true work of art that Michael would have loved to be part of!

I would love to see it again !

I saw it over the summer. GREAT show! It was like staging the return to me, like a pre-Bam teaser. Incredible show!

So many clocks, so many tick-tock sounds, and the periodic injection of "Remember the Time" in between songs/acts, ever present. Great!

During Will You Be There, they used the Memorial version with "painS".

The whole thing start to finish was hoaxy. MJ had his fingers deep within direction of this show, I firmly insist. There is no other way for all those clues to be in there.

Remember the Time... over n over n over again.

I heard the S of "PainS" very clearly. There were clues everywhere, more than I could grasp, I'm sure. I'm glad you experienced similar observations. I went expecting no clues. I figured it was just a Cirque show with an MJ theme. So I wasn't looking, they just smacked me in the face over and over again. No coincidence, no doubt.

I left thinking, if you thought that was great, just wait til... weeeee!!

People were up dancing and singing, strangers were interacting with each other, it was just infectious and oh my, it was the best time I've had in a long time. Hats off, MJ!

SweetSunsetwithMJ - you really should try to go. One of the biggest disappointments I have is not going to see the brothers perform a few months ago because I felt like you. But I've been hearing so many good things about the show that now I wish I had gone.

I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. They have MJ on the screen a majority of the time and his voice singing the vocals so you find yourself getting caught up into the show as though he's "almost' there. The performance is everything he envisioned for Cirque (IMO) and I also think his hands and mind are all over it.

They have the gates of Neverland (I believe they are the actual gates?) and the performances are done with style. Like Bec said, you can't help but be smacked in the face with "clues" like the ticking clock and the word "painS" being used.

One of the best things, I think, is that everyone around you loves MJ. The atmosphere is great and gives a small glimpse of what an MJ concert must feel like.

Blessings to you :)

Emulik - Congratuations! I'm happy for you as children bring such joy and blessings into ones life.

Hugs :)

Dear Sweetsunset,
I had same feeling as you expressed above when I had the opportunity to see the show in Las Vegas and let it pass...I have since seen it three times and wish I could see it more. Michael is all over the show, as is the hoax. I believe in one location he was singing some songs live. Others who have seen it in various places also commented on this in the past. For me it is a joyous experience and reinforced the hoax.

Dear Sweetsunset, when I read the first announcement about the coming Immortal Tour I had the same feeling like you have. I've never had the opportunity to go to one of MJ's concerts and to see him on stage. So it would have been a wonderful chance to go to one of his concerts in 2009/2010. Since MJ's 'death' I felt sad that I'd never have had the experience to see him perform. I thought that the Immortal Tour show would be a tribute and give a very small glimpse or a sparkle of MJ of what it might have been. I went to the show with the idea to see the amazing CdS acts performed on MJ songs, no more, no less and I was looking forward to it. During the show there were so many moments which gave me chills, because, being a beLIEver, I felt MJ's spirit or presence in every detail of the show, not in a sad way but in a more convincing way that MJ must act behind the curtain and that he's one of the guys of the team.
Of course it's up to you Sweetsunset and I can feel with you, but to me personally I wouldn't have missed this show for one sparkle, it feels like a gift of MJ and I'm grateful to have seen and felt this beautiful experience.  :bearhug:

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and experiences about this show, I loved to read them all.  :) And I'd love to read the stories of the ones who are going, please share  :icon_razz:

@ Everlasting: Are you going to see the Immortal show in Antwerp also? I haven't seen planned dates in Holland so far.
And are you planning to go to Night of Proms november 23/24 with The Jacksons (yes, the real brothers!). According to @Voice it was a great show, she regrets she had doubts and didn't go. I also had doubts but now I'm hesitating....!

Hi Do, the Immortal Tour show in Antwerp is in March, isn't it? Maybe there will be a show in Holland, who knows, that would be nice. Yes, thanks, I've read about The Jacksons on Night of the Proms. That's great too! Good luck with your choice :) Have a nice weekend!

LOVE

That sure was a clue, I haven't noticed it though, how couldn't  I have noticed that one?  :icon_razz: The songs in a particular order is interesting because it could be a clue, like the songs you mentioned above. What did you think about the performance of "Dancing Machine"? Great song and performance, but sad too, I mean I noticed the amazing dance performance which was great but sad too, one dancer had his hands and feet bound to a sort of cage (like a puppet on a string). At the end all dancers dropped down on the floor. A message about the power and exploitation of the entertainment industry perform til you drop? IDK, that's how I interpreted it.
A very short intro of "Gone Too Soon" followed by "(When There's LOVE) I'll Be There" was a huge clue as well, I think.

I'm happy for you that you will go the the show in March too!! I hope you will find more interesting clues!

LOVE

Maru, I don't want to give you false hope and I don't know the Immortal World tour schedule than what I've seen on the CdS site, but I suppose that since this is a world tour it may be possible that there will be shows in South America and so in Argentina as well. I do hope so!!

Wish you much love, fun and (Halloween) cake on your birthday! Send you a  :bearhug:

I come home from the Show and I can say WOW.....the Show was an absolute hammer.
Artist of the Cirque were great, with lights on Body and the performence. However,
there were no Living Tree, nothing, and no gone too soon Song.....?At the performence with
the big great Book, i saw the word BUM..and the Clock, with Neverland on it, gone backwards.
At the Song, They don`t care about us, the whole Arena was singing with, it was great.
The whole time of the Show i had the feeling, that Michael was there, maybe his spirit.
Now, all to get the chance to see this Show in your Country, make it,go go go.
It was awesome. Thank you Cirque de Soleil......
And thank you Michael...
love to all
