[glow=red:1dqqhppk]Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate announced today that it is closing down 168-year-old News of the World, Britain's biggest Sunday tabloid[/glow:1dqqhppk]currently embroiled in an intensifying scandal over alleged phone hacking of celebrities, families of terror victims and a murdered girl.

James Murdoch, who heads News International's European operations, said the paper will publish its last edition Sunday.

Murdoch told the staff that the paper's good deeds "have been sullied by behavior that was wrong; indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company.

"The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself," James Murdoch, Rupert's son, said. "Wrongdoers turned a good newsroom bad and this was not fully understood or adequately pursued."

Murdoch said the final edition will be ad free, with profits donated to charity. "These are strong measures. They are made humbly and out of respect. I am convinced they are the right thing to do," he said.

The News of the World's alleged hacking had affected News Corp.'s stock price and raised questions about the company's proposed takeover of British Sky Broadcasting.

As the scandal continues to unravel, its scope is becoming clear. London's Metropolitan Police say detectives are now analyzing and sifting through 11,000 pages of material, evidence that contains 4,000 names from the paper. The police have asked for patience as these thousands of possible victims are reached in the probe.

The allegations paint the journalists at News of the World as callous reporters who would apparently stop at nothing to get a tabloid headline. Actor Hugh Grant, who himself was hacked by the News of the World, lashed out at one of the paper's former reporters on the BBC saying ''you guys had no morals, no scruples at all, you didn't care who got hurt, just as long as you were able to sell your newspaper for a lot of money. Your only motive was profit.''

The paper is also alleged to have sent payments to Scotland Yard officers. The details of the alleged payments of tens of thousands of dollars surfaced on Wednesday after emails were sent to police by News International as part of its internal investigation.

Even more damaging, potentially, is that they reportedly also show that the payments were authorized by British Prime Minister David Cameron's former spokesman, Andy Coulson, when he was editing the News of the World. This investigation will be overseen by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

[glow=red:1dqqhppk]The IPCC's Deputy Chairwoman Deborah Glass told the BBC she would personally supervise the "robust" inquiry to give "independent oversight". There are newspaper reports claiming that several people will likely to be arrested within days.[/glow:1dqqhppk]

James Murdoch said the paper had wrongly maintained that the hacking was limited to one reporter. "We now have voluntarily given evidence to the police that I believe will prove that this was untrue and those who acted wrongly will have to face the consequences. This was not the only fault. The paper made statements to Parliament without being in the full possession of the facts. This was wrong."

This is great - now, let's hope and pray that this continues on down the line to those that have slaughtered Michael's good name (and others). Hmmm....Diane Dimond and others should take notice.

Souza,

I couldn't agree with you more.  Karma is a bitch. As my mom would say what goes around comes around, but it will come back tenfold. Now people are waking up and each individual person will be accountable for their actions. As I was telling a colleague of mine I think that each reporter that does not do their homework and write something that is not accurate should be sued. The individual reporter should be sued, then maybe just maybe they will think before they react.

Interesting development on 7/7.

Indeed, also TS's post today

Keep an eye out for 777!

:) :) moonwalk_/

Isn't it unusual for someone in Murdochs position to be so prepared to take full responsibilty for such wrong doing and close the paper down. Hmmmmm. I think this could well be the start of something. mj_bad/

Murrays trial was also postponed today! Maybe there will be no need for a trial at all, now it's as though the media are on trial in a manner of speaking.

Murray's trial wasn't postponed, there is a hearing postponed. Trial is still set to start on September 8.

This is HUGE.  They are already arresting people.  Curiously, The Simpsons episode (on FOX, owned by Murdoch) which aired as the scandal was breaking pokes fun at Murdoch!  Did they know?  If so, who are 'THEY'?

Just a reminder that Prince Al-Waleed, Michael's partner in Kingdom Entertainment, owns 7% of FOX along with some editorial rights.

Just feels to me like the dominoes are starting to fall.  I can almost hear the sounds of that runaway train.

This is interesting, thank you for posting!
I hope it really starts something good.
I wonder how those people react who used to read this paper... Do they spend some time thinking over this case, or just start to buy another tabloid...?

MURDOCH NEWSPAPER'S 'DISINFORMATION' ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON[/glow:2suxps5c]

Is the CIA trying to spread lies about Michael Jackson's death?

On 29 June 2009, the Los Angeles coroner's office dismissed as "inaccurate" claims made in Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper (UK) that Michael Jackson's autopsy revealed he was emaciated and almost bald when he died.

Michael Jackson: coroner's office disputes the Sun's autopsy .

The Sun claimed Michael Jackson's "hips, thighs and shoulders were riddled with needle wounds."

Rupert Murdoch's newspaper claimed to have been given leaked results of Jackson's autopsy.

LA County assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said "I don't know where that information came from, or who that information came from. It is not accurate. Some of it is totally false."

I'll keep bringing this up, but wasn't it the News of the World that stated Michael had 6mths to live?????

I would be asking questions about that misinformation......but it did come true..How did they find out ???

Or were they given planted false information, just like the hyperbaric chamber and e m bones, by MJ's people to feed the hoax, and they knew they'd run with it.

So this means that News of the World, The Sun, and all tabloids owned by Murdoch can/will fall?
Shit, vendetta tastes good.

Enjoy the takeover, mr. Murdoch.
