Katherine was upset that di Leo had played up stories to the press. She confronted him before MJ went to Japan ... "You shouldn't be spreading stuff like this. It makes my son look like an idiot!"
Di Leo responded by saying ... "Oh, it's good to do it. It makes people wonder about him - and this is what we want".
Di Leo = another nail in MJ's coffin :twisted:

I can understand wanting to make people wonder about him, keep him mysterious..which is what he's done so far anyway...but to say it's ok to make him look like an idiot... :evil: :evil: :evil:

So it appears to be true that DiLeo Had some secret agenda in spreading all the "elephant bones" and "oxygen chamber" stuff back in the eighties?

I agree. I have no doubt Michael knew about it. The elephant man bones story broke in 1987 and by then the oxygen chamber thing was already out there, too. If Frank acted on his own, Michael couldn't have been too upset since he kept him on as manager for another 2 years until 1989. The only other explanation would be that Michael was clueless or completely duped by DiLeo, and I'm not buying that for a second.
Besides, Frank said "It makes people wonder about him - and this is what we want."
Who's "we"? I read it to mean him and Michael.

I remember seeing a documentary in which another former manager was interviewed. This guy said that Mike was intrigued by Barnum, and wanted to create a similar myth around himself. That documentary is somewhere on my hard drive, I will try to dig it up again.

I remember Michael saying in an interview that he contibuted in staging those stories... I think Michael agreed with that. Don't forget Michael is an entertainer,and he liked to play jokes... I think it was for fun,and for fooling the media..

I don't like Frank, but you are all fools if you think Frank "did" this to MJ...MJ was very much in control of his career and knew how he wanted people to see him... Frank was hired as MJ's "NO" man. MJ didn't want to "look" bad saying no to people so he hired Frank to do it for him and MJ could keep his persona intact. MJ is a genious and got to where he was on his own. The only thing he didn't see coming was the backfire. LOL, I just read my own post....I'm not calling anyone above a fool, I'm just using the word in humour.

Everyone in music industry wants to profit in one way or another; a lot of managers and producers can come across as shady or suspicious, but you can't survive in the business when you're afraid of your own shadow. And how could Frank profit when the guy he manages looks like an idiot? A lot of those rumors, like "Elephant man bones" and "oxygen chamber" were Michael's own ideas and all Frank had to do was make it happen for him. Mr. DiLeo is a human too and in the end he made some wrong moves, which angered Michael.
